City of Tulips

Green Spaces

Pitesti is one of the greenest cities in Romania. It has several parks all around the city and the largest natural park in the country, the Trivale Forest. Also, in Pitesti you can find the biggest natural park arranged with European funding from Europe, "Lunca Argesului Park". What's more, you can take a walk on the Arges river side. A great advantage is that Pitesti has four seasons, each of them beautiful in its way.

It all started back in 1972 when the first tulips were brought in the city. There were planted 3000 tulip bulbs and 200 hyacinths.

No one thought that for Pitesti that day will mean a destiny, that it became in short time known as "City of Tulips", many people reffered to it as the piece of Holland from Romania.

In April 1978 was the first edition of the "Tulip Symphony", a symbol of the cultural life of Pitesti, a flower festival unlike any other in Romania. The event is marked by a series of thematic activities, all revolving around flowers, and their tradition in Pitesti.

Also known as the Pitești Experiment, it was designed as a way of "reeducating" political prisoners opposed to the communist government of Romania. The experiment's goal was for prisoners to discard past political and religious convictions, and, eventually, to alter their personalities to the point of absolute obedience. Estimates for the total number of people passed through the experiment range from 1,000 to 5,000. It is considered the largest and most intensive brainwashing torture program in the Eastern bloc.
