- 1883 Wiley took the position of chef chemist at Dept. of Agriculture.
- Conducted an experiment of human volunteers nicknamed, "the poison squad."
- He had them ingest food additives to test their impact on health.
- Wiley's work led to the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.

- Education: Studied food safety, went on to Hanover College, Indianan Medical College. In 1871, he finished his degree and stayed at that school to teach chemistry. Later, joined faculty of Purdue University as a chem professor.
