Background Information

This photo was captured in 1994 in Chechnya, Russia during the First Chechen War. This was an almost two year long war between the Russian Federation and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. This photo was taken in a war zone, where all that was left was a piano from what is perceived to have been a town at some point.

Though this war was not long, it's said that the tensions had been rising for decades and continued to rise after the war. This photo showed a glimpse of a soldier trying to find a moment of peace in the midst of the chaos, and that most likely had some effect on how the people began to perceive the war.
