Canadian Immigration
- mom came to Canada in 1994
- dad came to Canada in 1989
- were part of a large group of Chinese immigrants that arrived in the years after 1980
The Movement of Chinese Immigrants
- many Chinese people decided to move to Canada because of the low living standards in China back then
- undeveloped economy leading to low incomes
- on the other hand, Canada welcomed immigrants because Canada wanted to increase the workforce, many job opportunities and higher standard of living
About My Family
- chinese background
- I was born in Canada
- mom and dad both born in China and immigrated to Canada
Pull Factors of Canada
Mom:
- higher quality of living
- better education and health system, healthier environment
- Canadian government accepted immigrants easily compared to U.S.
Dad:
- liked Canada, decided to stay
Push Factors of China
Mom:
- like many others, left because of low quality of living
- wanted a better future for children
Why Ontario?
- many big flourishing cities like Toronto are in Ontario
- big cities = more job opportunities
- the most multicultural province
Dad:
- part of a learning program to go to Canada and see the outside world
- wanted a better learning experience
Conclusion
My future prediction:
- there will be a steady rate of Chinese immigrants because China's population is increasing rapidly
- more people in China = more people who want to move to a country with a smaller population, higher standard of living, etc.
- Canada is a great country for immigrants because of its multiculturalism resulting in fewer cultural barriers
