Environmental Factors Affecting Mental Health ^___^

Parental Guidance

- All of us undergo childhood. Therefore our mental health is mainly absorbed in this stage of our life. Being a child it is very important that the parents are taking good care of you and they put morals into you to give you a healthy mind. Researches also say that it became apparent that the main risk for antisocial behavior associated with ‘broken homes’ was a function of family discord and conflict, rather than family break-up as such. Similarly, in the 1980s it was shown that the risks of depressive disorders in adult life were a function of impaired parenting, rather than parental loss.

Influences

-Predicts that people tend to perceive and have a differential influence on themselves and others, based on personal biases; additionally, because of this perception, people tend to take action to counteract the messages’ influence. These types of perceptions stem from a self-motivated social desirability, a social-distance and a perceived exposure.

Love

-Environmental factors may also include love. Love of others greatly affects a person’s mental health. Receiving love from others will give positive effects on mental health while not feeling love from others or feeling of being alone and disregarded will give negative effects.

Abuse by Others

- Other people may experience abuse in their environment. Especially, the mental health of abused children is at great risk. Abused children are more likely to experience mental disorders or mental illness during childhood and into adulthood.

- Trust in others and feelings of being safe and cared for are key components to recovery from abuse. Few children are able to recover on their own. Support is critical, and professional counseling is sometimes required. If abuse is discovered early, the chances of a child returning to a healthy state of mind and avoiding serious mental disorders are greatly enhanced.

Diseases

-We admit that we can get diseases from our environment, thus having caution is absolutely necessary. Diseases, injuries and other physical problems often contribute to poor mental health and sometimes mental illness. Some physical causes can directly affect brain chemistry and contribute to mental illness. More commonly, poor physical health can affect self-esteem and people's ability to meet their goals, which leads to unhappiness or even depression. In such cases, receiving the best possible treatment for both the physical problem and the resulting psychological consequences is the key to optimal recovery to good mental health.
