Verbs & Verbals

Participles

A verbal that functions as an adjective,

and often ends in [-ing] or [-ed].

Examples:

  • The barking dog was hungry.
  • The singing bird was the main attraction at the zoo.
  • His devoted friend called to make sure everything was okay.

Gerunds

A verbal ending in [-ing]

that functions as a noun.

Examples:

  • I was irritated by Sam’s constant interrupting.

Infinitives

  • They do not appreciate my singing.

What is a verbal?

Words that are formed

from a verb, but function as a

different part of speech.

A verbal that's formed by using the word "to" plus the verb in its stem form. It functions as a noun, adjective or adverb.

  • That attorney has the right to represent you.
  • My favorite activity is sleeping.
  • The ants have arrived to grab the leftovers from the picnic.
  • Politicians fail to mention their true motives.
