After a failed murder attempt by Dounia, Svidrigailov takes the gun and shoots himself. He wants people to know that he went to America. This death is significant because it shows that he was in control of his own destiny, similar to an extraordinary man.
Raskolnikov admits to murdering the pawnbroker and her sister to Sonia. Raskolnikov says that he wanted to be the next Napolean. Although Sonia is disappointed, Sonia says she will stay by his said as long as he admits to the murders. She gives him a wooden cross to wear.

At first, Raskolnikov has a tough time in prison. However, once he finds Jesus and commits to Sonia, prison life becomes a lot easier for him.
Just before Raskolnikov gives in and admits to the murder, the painter Nikolai admits storms in and admits to the murder. The stunned Porfiry releases Raskolnikov for the time being.

Raskolnikov visits Porfiry again. Porfiry starts playing a game with Raskolnikov with hopes of making him confess to the murder. Although Porfiry knows Raskolnikov is guilty, he needs Raskolnikov to admit in order to convict him.
Raskolnikov gives Sonia a surprise visit and they discuss the well-being of Sonia's family. They also discuss the murder of Lizaveta and they read the story of Lazarus. Raskolnikov informs Sonia that he will will tell her who the murderer is. Svidrigailov eavesdropped on the entire conversation.
Raskolnikov tells Razumihin to watch over his family because he will he needs time to himself. Razumihin realizes that Raskolnikov is the murderer.
Raskolnikov meets with Dounia, Pulcheria, and Luzhin. He explains what Svidrigailov has offered. Raskolnikov also confronts Luzhin about his relationship, and eventually Luzhin and Dounia break up. Luzhin blames the breakup on Raskolnikov.
Svidrigailov surprises Raskolnikov by offering Dounia ten thousand roubles. Svidrigailov previously ruined Dounia's reputation by making lies up about her. Raskolnikov assures him that Dounia will refuse the gift.
Upon arriving home, Raskolnikov is greeted by a man who simply calls Raskolnikov a murderer. Raskolnikov does not recognize the man.
Raskolnikov visits the man in charge of finding the murder suspect, Porfiry Petrovich. Porfiry brings up an article that Raskolnikov wrote several months ago about certain men being above the law. Porfiry is clearly suspicious of Raskolnikov, and Raskolnikov avoids an attempt that Porfiry makes to catch him.
Sonia enters Raskolnikov's flat and realizes that he lives in extreme poverty. When she leaves the flat, she is followed by a man named Svidrigailov.
Raskolnikov recognizes an injured man in the street as his friend Marmeladov. He brings Marmeladov back to Marmeladov's flat where he ultimately dies. Raskolnikov gives the devastated family 20 roubles and he promises the family his future support. He also meets Marmeladov's daughter Sonia.
Raskolnikov's mother Pulcheria and his sister Dounia are grief stricken when they see him in his condition. Razumihin grows an attraction towards Dounia.
Raskolnikov witnesses a person jumping off a bridge and killing himself. This relieves Raskolnikov because he realizes that it could have been him killing himself, and he now feels refreshed that he is alive.
Raskolnikov meets the police inspector Zamyotov in a cafe and he acts very suspicious. Raskolnikov basically describes to Zamyotov entirely what he has done. However, Zamyotov simply thinks that he's crazy.
Raskolnikov finds an axe in his caretaker's shed, gets a fake pledge for the pawnbroker, and puts on his overcoat before heading to the pawnbroker's flat.
After a night of drinking, Raskolnikov's dear friend Razumihin starts taking care of his sick friend.
Raskolnikov meets his sister's fiance, Pyotr Petrovich Luzhin. He presents himself as a snobby man that wants others to think highly of him. Raskolnikov calls Luzhin out on his attempts at "using" his sister. Luzhin is offended and storms out of Raskolnikov's flat.
Raskolnikov's flat fills up with people including Zamyotov, a detective. Raskolnikov learns that painters are currently the primary suspects in the murder case.
After considering dumping the stolen items in the river, Raskolnikov hides the items under a stone in a courtyard
Raskolnikov is reported by his landlady as a debtor. While at the police station, Raskolnikov overhears people discussing the murders. Raskolnikov faints.
Raskolnikov lays low and sleeps for a majority of the time. This essentially continues for the rest of the novel.
Raskolnikov slashes Alyona with his axe. Shorty after, Lizaveta unexpectedly shows up. Raskolnikov resorts to killing her. He barely escapes the flat.
