The Philippines was an American territory under the 1898 Treaty of Paris at the time. Japan had attacked the Philippines to drive the United States away from the Pacific and to destroy the airfields stationed there.

Who was fighting?
Japan was fighting a coalition of Filipino and American soldiers who were greatly outnumbered, giving Japan a huge advantage.
When did the Invasion Occur?
The invasion occurred between 1942-1945; the same time as World War II. The invasion also occurred hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7th, 1941.
How Many Casualties?
76,000 soldiers were captured and forced to undertake on the infamous "Death March" to a prison camp more than 100 kilometers north. An estimated 7,000 - 10,000 prisoners died due to thirst, hunger and exhaustion. During the occupation itself, between 500,000 - 1,000,000 Filipinos died.

The Invasion occurred in the strategic location mainly between Japan and and the South Pacific Ocean.
What was the Outcome?
Most of the cities in the Philippines were reduced to dust. The Japanese were overwhelmed the Americans and Filipinos and captured the Philippine Islands. About 78,000 American and Filipino soldiers were captured and became prisoners of Japan. Only Japan gained from this battle.
