  • Conducted by the University of Iowa in 1939
  • 20-22 orphan children were placed in controlled groups
  • First group were praised for good speech
  • Second group were told they stutter + speech imperfection
  • all children in second group developed speech problems from psychological aspect
  • Conducted by behaviorist John B. Watson
  • Previously, experiment only used on dogs
  • Test subject was nine month old Albert B.
  • Showed subject many stimuli, including rabbits to burning newspaper
  • Reacted normally, until sharp metal sounds were added to stimuli
  • Albert became traumatized, and eventually associated all stimuli exposed to with fear
  • Albert Bandura, psychologist
  • Conducted in 1961 & 1963
  • Two groups of children shown different videos, one group shown no video
  • One video violent towards a doll, other non-violent
  • Children were let into a room with the doll from the video and given a variety of fake weapons
  • Objective to see if children could be violent on their own without influence

  • 1940s, conducted by psychologist Lauretta Bender
  • Gave daily shock therapy to 98 child patients
  • Purpose to cure of "Childhood Schizophrenia"
  • Also gave children LSD and Mushrooms

1. The Brenda Reimer Experiment

  • Believed That Children are innocent & pure
  • Would react better than adults
  • Do not yet think for themselves
  • Clean thoughts not influenced by anything yet

3. The Broken Toy Experiment

  • Began in 1965, Conducted by psychologist John Money
  • Conducted on David Reimer without his knowledge
  • A botched circumcision lead to experiment beginning
  • Was raised as a female instead of a male, renamed "Brenda"
  • Reimer eventually commited suicide as a result
  • Objective to see if children could feel guilt and time dilation
  • Children were given a toy rigged to break
  • When toy broke, the adult would state "Oh my." and stare at child for one minute
  • Children experienced guilt, and most came out to be traumatized

2. The Visual Cliff Experiment

  • Conducted by Cornell University psychologists
  • Created a visual cliff using glass and reflections
  • Placed mother across "cliff" from baby
  • Mothers tempted babies to crawl over to them
  • Only three out of 36 infants did in total
  • Proved that infants would most likely trust instincts more than mothers

6.Experimental Spinal Taps On Children

  • Conducted in 1896 by pediatrician Arthur Wentworth
  • Purpose to test if spinal taps were painful
  • Preformed on 29 toddlers and infants
  • Concluded only temporarily painful
  • Children's parents unaware of procedures
