Utilitarianism and Ethnicity: How Do They Relate?

Ethnic Fractionalization in Social Nations

Bridging the Topics - Ethnicity and Its Connection to Utilitarianism. Why Does It Matter?

  • Denmark-87% Danish
  • Norway-87% Norwegian
  • Netherlands-81% Dutch
  • Sweden-71% Swedish
  • Finland-89% Finnish
  • Iceland-93% Icelandic
  • China-91% Han
  • Vietnam- 86% Kinh
  • This table representing the ethnic fractionalization of various socialist nations.
  • Using this chart, it could be surmised that the utilititerianism is most notably found in nations that share a common ethnic basis.
  • With this in mind, some politcal scientists make the argument that leftist policies are o ly ffit for these ethnically homogenous nations.
  • A shared historical and perssonal background causes humans to form a tighti-knit view of their societies, especially in positions in which they find themselves surrounded by members of other ethnic backrounds.
  • From here, it can be surmised that there is fact a correlation between nations that are ethnicalkly homogenous and socialist utilitarian mindsets.
  • Harkening back to Sen. Sanders example of Denmark as a hallmark example of socialism, Denmark's national identity is characterized by a utilitarian mindset, showcased in their community oriented laws and policies.
  • It can be argued that this sense of a utilitarianism is fueled a sense of mutual identification that is spread throughout the nation.
  • Nations where the majority population share historic, cultural, and religious ties find a more deeply rooted sense of utilitarianism, thus allotting leftist policies, such as the ones found in Denmark.
  • Through this,a society or nation's ethnic fractionalization begins to become a prominent factor.

Counterclaims

  • The argument can be made that utilitarianism has much less an inherent quality of liberal politics, and an aspect that applies to the concept of politics and nation-states as a whole.
  • Another argument can be made against the hedonistic nature that the concept of utilitarianism. with this in mind, there is a possibility that nations can give their people spiritual and/or conceptual gain.
  • It can be argued that ethnic fractionalization has nothing to do with one's ability to identify with those surrounding them, as showcased in the socialist nation Indonesia with 15 diverse native ethnic groups, and the socialist nation of India.
