No matter what Lily's parents do, they can not get Lily out of the pre-operational stage. She continues to throw fits, and puts a fight any time her parents try to approach her. Her parents aren't sure that they will ever be able to get her out of this stage. They are worried that they aren't doing things right. So they meet up with a doctor, to discuss their resources, in hopes of finding a way to get through this.
Lily is a 9 year old girl with down syndrome. She has a hard time understanding her mom's rules, and often breaks them. She is able to communicate her needs through words and gestures. But she still gets frustrated when things don't go her way. According to Piaget's cognitive development theory, Lily is in the pre-operational stage even though she is already 9. Piaget's theory does not focus on a wide enough range of people. These stages are not always the way children develop.
Jean Piaget's Cognitive Developmental Theory
Attempts to explain how a child creates a model of the world. (McLoed, 2009.)
Jean Piaget's 1st Stage of Cognitive Development
Jean Piaget's 2nd Stage of Cognitive Development
- Birth- 2 years
- Key accomplishment is object performance (knowing a object still exists even when it is out of sight.)
- Ex: Child imitating someone or something even when they are not there.
- 2- 7 years
- Child begins to use symbols, language and to speak. Child also gains understanding of past and present.
- Egocentric thinking
- Ex: Child thinks the entire universe revolves around them. They cannot understand others point of view.
Down syndrome- Childhood
Down syndrome causes learning difficulties, which leads to delayed development in many areas.
Jean Piaget's 4th Stage of Cognitive Development
Stage 4- Formal Operational
- 12 years- to adulthood
- Able to think abstractly
- Ability to test hypothesis (hypothetical thinking)
Jean Piaget's 3rd Stage of Cognitive Development
Disability and Development
Stage 3- Concrete Operational
- Down syndrome is a disability that is directly related to delayed development.
- The onset of the disability has a great impact on the response to the disability. (Smart, 2012.)
- The onset and treatment of the disability can cause an individual to miss out on important stages of development, and cause them to miss out on reaching their full potential (Smart, 2012.)
- 7-11 years old
- Major turning point in a child's development
- Marks the beginning of logical and operational thought
- Ex: They see and 2015 F-150, not just a truck
