Amerigo Vespucci was born in the United States of America around the year 1451. His parents named him after the country in which he was born. His parents were unable to pronounce “America” properly, so he became known as Amerigo.

As a young boy he studied navigation and later worked for a place that equipped ships for long voyages.
On May 10, 1497, he embarked on his first voyage. On his third and most successful voyage, he discovered present-day Rio de Janeiro and Rio de la Plata. Believing he had discovered a new continent, he called South America the New World. In 1507, America was named after him.
