- protect trade
- shift toward network centric warfare
- communication will always be important
Implementation of Corbett's Naval Theory
Interdependence of Forces
- large component in Corbett's naval theory
- did not see sea power as decisive
- used in Siege of Vicksburg, Battle of Port royal, and Battle of Okinawa
Battle of the Atlantic
SLOCs are sort of important
- US started by concentrating the little forces we had in "Mahanian" hunter-killer groups with focus being to counter German U-boats rather than secure our SLOCs
- Germany destroyed our shipping
- We then focused on securing SLOCs by using convoy system and developing better ASW
- Differing view of Mahan's on what command of the sea is led to realization that keeping open lines of operation and communication should always be an objective, not treating the sea as territory and fighting decisive battles
Large Navy = More World Power
Sir Julian Corbett
"it is almost impossible that a war can be decided by naval action alone; unaided naval pressure can only
work by a process of exhaustion. Its effects must always be slow, and so galling both to our own
commercial community and to neutrals, that the tendency is always to accept terms of peace that
are far from conclusive."
- Roosevelt used Mahanian theory as his reasoning to expand navy
Timeless Naval Theory
- Began developing naval theory 20 yrs after Mahan
- Agreed that command of sea is important and small forces use guerre de course
- recognized that people live on land
- strategy can change
- saw that sea lines of communication were vital
Preceded by Mahan
Corbett's theory has capabilities to evolve throughout time with advances in techonology and changes in international affairs
- Large scale fleet to fleet engagements
- Command of sea is critical
- winning naval battles
- Strategy shouldn't change
- weaker forces use commerce raiding
- wrote Influence of Sea Power on History
- Popular with other navies
Changeover to Corbett
Large Navy = More World Power
- Roosevelt used Mahanian theory as his reasoning to expand navy
Implementing Corbett's ideals today
- Interdependence of forces
- Keeping SLOCs
- Importance of Communication
- Flexible strategy
Joint Forces
- different branches of military working on similar projects come together
- cost effective
- use joint operations in war
Keeping open SLOC
& Importance of communication
