Storyline

Kit's Journey

In this story, Katherine goes through many realizations and changes. She realizes the town she had been dreaming of was rather dreary, she is confronted with the idea that not everyone was as fortunate as her, and she struggles with concepts such as lack of certain rights. Throughout this story, no matter where Kit went, she kept her dialogue interesting and packed with emotion, never stopping to make her character arc boring in the slightest! This book was a pleasurable read, with the characters and character interactions shining the most.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond

Author's Purpose

Theme and All

The main purpose of this story was to entertain, but the book's actual meaning goes deeper than that. This book centralizes around the idea that You don't always know what is really happening around you. From the supposed "witch" who turned out to be the lovely Hannah, to the strange stereotypes the settlers of Barbados had put on Kit, this story tries to get the reader to understand, not everyone is as they appear.

by Elizabeth George Speare

Standing Up

When Prudence first came into the story, she seemed like just another hopless face amongst the sadness Kit was feeling. After working together with both Hannah and Katherine, though, Prudence turned into an intelligent and brave young lady, whom now chooses to trust her heart. Prudence is mostly described as scraggly and skinny, normally bearing torn or worn clothing. Prudence begins to show her true colors when she has to stand up and plead Kit's innocence to a council whom had claimed she was a witch.

Characters

  • Kit Tyler
  • Hanna Tupper

In the opening of the book, Nathaniel is seen as childish yet full of spirit. He is a strong yet lanky man, whom bears a light blond set of hair and a heart filled with passion. Throughout the story, Nat's relationship with Kit is the main thing that changes. He stays his energetic and crude self, yet develops a lasting love for Kit Tyler. Nat's love for Kit, and sudden promotion to captain of his own vessel, really let his character shine and develop through the story.

Development

Katherine Tyler, or Kit Tyler as she is also called, starts off in the story as a bold young lady with a sizable amount of personality. Kit is described as beautiful, with thick brown hair and a knack for wearing lovely dresses. Throughout the book, Kit goes from being a upper-class, knowledgeable young lady, with little insight on how the financial and lower parts of the world work, to a sophisticated and open-minded friend and worker. Katherine turned into her present self due to the hard work she had to endure while staying at her Aunt's house.
