Son by Lois Lowry

Book Theme

recommendation

I believe that the theme of Son is that we should try our hardest to make sacrifices for the people we love and that love will always overcome evil.

I recommend Son by Lois Lowry if you enjoyed The Giver, and the ending made you want to murder someone! This books clears up the ending of The Giver as well as gives a back story to the characters and tells what happens years after the sudden ending!

My option

I think Son was a very well-written, enchanting conclusion to The Giver. I have been amazed by Lowry's writing style, and overall talent for weaving together stories, characters, and suspense, and Son was no exception.

Though I haven't read the whole series, I believe Lowry was able to include new problems and emotions into the series, while bringing back old characters, plots, and settings from The Giver.

I admire the way Lowry centers her story around realistic, relateable main characters, but sets their stories in adverse, futuristic, or nontraditional conditions.

As an author, Lowry is known for writing about difficult and controversial subject matters for children. She has explored complex issues like racism, terminal illness, murder, and the Holocaust among other challenging topics. She has also explored very controversial issues such as questioning authority like in The Giver quartet. Her writing on such matters has brought her both praise and criticism. In particular, her work The Giver has been met with a diversity of reactions from schools in America, some of which have adopted her book as a part of the mandatory curriculum, while others have prohibited the book's inclusion in classroom studies.

main Conflicts

Author info

The main conflicts of the story were....

  • Will Claire ever regain her memory in the Between?
  • As Claire sneaks her way into Einor's life, will he try to hold onto her, or will he encourage her to risk the price for the reward?
  • Will Claire's son rise to the occasion, and defeat the evil creature in return for everything he has wanted in his life, finding his mother?
  • Was Claire's trade really worth the reward?
  • And lastly, who is Claire's son and how are all the characters connected to the "The Giver"?

Lois Lowry is an American author of young adult and children's literature. She began her career as a photographer and a freelance journalist during the early 1970s. Her work as a journalist drew the attention of Houghton Mifflin, and they encouraged her to write her first children's book, A Summer to Die, which was published in 1977 (when Lowry was 40 years old). She has since written more than 30 books for children and published an autobiography.

Characters

Plot

Claire: The main character of the story is a beautiful, free spirited, young girl who takes on a long, hard journey through the Dystopian world.

Son: Claire's son, who has a special gift that could help him defeat the evil force

Alys: Took care of Claire in the between and served as a sort of "mother"

Einar: His life choices guide Claire as she attempts the same journey

Community Leader: Part of Claire's old village, where she was born, very connected with her son.

  • Son is book 4 and the conclusion to the Giver series.
  • The plot is divided into three main parts: Before, Between, and Beyond

The Before

The Between

Claire washes up on the shores of a coastal village, suffering from amnesia. In the new space she meets Alys, who took care of Claire and served as her mother figure. But as her memories return, even this close knit, free spirited, and loving community cannot keep Claire from continuing her journey.

The before starts off with Claire, a 14 year old, Birthmother. A complication during her first pregnancy initiates a forbidden relationship between Claire and her son. Commotion arises within the Community. Here the plot from The Giver intertwines with Son, which incites Claire to leave the security of her home to search for her missing son.

The Beyond

The third section of "Son" is hard to talk about without giving away too much about the plot, but what mainly happens is that Claire gets out of the community and sets out to find her son after making a difficult sacrifice. Claire has to find, and meet, her now grown son. He is a leader in the new community Claire comes upon and hears Claire's story. She decides that there is a dark force out there and her son is the only one who can defeat it.
