Allusion: Cupid

Location: Act 1, Scene 4, Line 18

Quote: "You are a lover. Borrow Cupid's wings and soar with them above common ground."

Cupid is the Roman god of love. His mother is Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Cupid is known for making people fall in love with his bow and quiver of arrows, piercing people in the heart, which made them fall in love with the first thing they saw.

Context Surrounding Allusion

Shakespeare foreshadows the future of Romeo by alluding to the Roman god of love, Cupid.

Romeo is sad because his love Rosaline has decided to be chastised. Romeo, Mercutio, and Benvolio are attending the Capulet's party to try and cheer Romeo up. Mercutio and Benvolio are telling Romeo to get hit by Cupid's arrow and let himself look at other girls and he will see that there are girls better then Rosaline.
