Sea snakes

Pearl Diving in UAE

Sea snakes occur throughout the UAE sea area. There are at least seven species, all of which belong to one family, the Hydrophiidae. They are excellent swimmers and the laterally flattened tail makes them easily recognisable and distinguishes them from eels.

The lulu, or pearl oyster was a source of wealth in the Emirates long before the discovery of oil. Pearl oysters occur naturally on relatively shallow banks in the Gulf.

Dugongs

Pearl Divers

Worldwide there are approximately 100,000 dugongs, almost 90% live in Australian waters. The Arabian Gulf and Red Sea host an estimated 7,300 dugongs. This is the second largest population outside Australia. About 40% (3,000) of these occur in the UAE making Abu Dhabi a significant location for dugong conservation.

To the people of the Emirates, pearling offered a major, if seasonal, form of employment. While many of those engaged in the pearling industry would return home to tend date gardens in inland oases and herd camels between seasons, there were others for whom it was a full-time occupation.

Whales & Dolphins

Perhaps a third of the 80 known species of whales and dolphins, or cetaceans as they are collectively called, may occur off the shores of the United Arab Emirates.

Dolphins

It is possible to hear the blow of a whale from quite a distance, even before you have seen it. Listen too, for splashes. The thunderous sound of a breaching whale can carry over a couple of kilometres and whales in such a mood have been sighted from as fas away as 8 to 10 kms.

Of the seven recognised species of marine turtles in the world, four occur in the waters of the UAE; the green turtle (Chelonia mydas ), the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata ), the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta ) and the huge leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea ).

Early mornings and evenings are usually the best times to look for dolphins, as the sea is often calmer and the light better. They can be found any distance offshore, the majority of sightings of dolphins so far being fairly close to shore.
