Qualifications/Requirements
- minimum of 80 hours of certified board approved training
- minimum of 2 years full time in the comparison and identification of prints.
- a bachelors degree plus two years experience as prescribed by the LPCB.
- write an oral exam
- The Latent Print Examiner is assigned to the Sheriff’s Office.
- The Latent Print Examiner class is distinguished from the Latent Print Examiner Trainee, in that the former performs the full range of duties and testifies as an expert witness.
- Receive automated or hard copies of fingerprints; compares fingerprint cards and demographic information for identification purposes; consolidates/purges fingerprint records and jail records as a result of an identification; maintains and files fingerprint cards and fingerprint evidence.

Salaries for latent print examiners may range from $30,000 to $150,000 with large state and federal agencies paying the highest rates.
- Progressing to higher salary ranges is possible and should be expected as each unit has a variety of levels of experience and training from the lowest fingerprint technician to the director of the latent print team.
Latent Print Examiner Training and Education
Becoming A Latent print examiner
- Technical Training Required:Minimum of 80 Hours of Certification Board approved training in latent print matters,
Education Requirements: Bachelor's Degree plus two (2) years full-time experience as prescribed by the LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board)
OR
- An Associate Degree (or documentation of 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of college credits) plus 3 years full-time experience as a latent print examiner equals the Bachelor's Degree requirement
OR
- Four (4) years full-time experience as a latent print examiner required . 1 equals the Bachelor's Degree requirement
Since there may be multiple police departments within each city or within each neighborhood, hiring requirements may vary from place to place. Police departments with large fingerprinting departments or police stations that process lots of crimes may have more intensive hiring requirements than smaller police stations.
