Speech Analysis: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos

The perils of Indifference cont.

Field of Dreams: People will come

Pathos (Emotions) – Ellie creates compassion, curiosity, anger and fear during his speech. Curiosity by the questions he asks. Anger by talking about the tragedies that happened in the past, the fear back then and now on what could happen and how a dark shadow is casted over humanity. Lastly compassion on how much gratitude he has. "Surely it will be judged, and judged severely, in both moral and metaphysical terms."

Logos (Logic/Reason) – Ellie makes it very clear that he appreciates everyone helping and making this world a better place, but he still wants everyone to know that not everything is good. Yes there is good humanity, but just like back then during the holocaust, it only takes one person to bring everything back down. "And now we knew, we learned, we discovered that the Pentagon knew, the State Department knew. And the illustrious occupant of the White House then, who was a great leader "

Field of Dreams: People will come

Elie Wiesel

The perils of Indifference

Logos (Logic/Reason)- This movie gives you logic on how if this idea worked backed then, then it will work now. You just have to show people that this Idea which is the baseball field is still fun and good. "They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it; for it is money they have and peace they lack."

Ethos (Ethics/Morals)- Ellie is a great man that has been through a lot when he was a child. He knows more of what happened back then during the holocaust than any historian. He is here now providing a speech to the people to give gratitude but to let others know what had fallen, the lessons learned and the tragedies back then. “These failures have cast a dark shadow over humanity”. “And now, I stand before you, Mr. President -- Commander-in-Chief of the army that freed me, and tens of thousands of others -- and I am filled with a profound and abiding gratitude to the American people."Gratitude" is a word that I cherish. Gratitude is what defines the humanity of the human being.”

Ethos (Ethics/Morals)- Mann persuades ray that there still is hope. Especially for baseball and his field. “This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again. Ohhhhhhhh, people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.” The purpose for speaking this is to let people know that although it worked in the past and it does not seem to work now, you can still have hope and it will all be better again.

Pathos (Emotions)- This part of the movie shows that you should never give up on your dreams. There is always going to be that person that gives you the negative outlook on things, but there is always going to be that one person that will keep your head up high. "They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past."
