Cultural Impact

Environmental Impact

  • Baby boomers changed the face of the modern family. When they rebelled and promoted the “free love” and “do what feels right” mottos they promoted sexual promiscuity. Some people started open marriages, where the partners are free to have relationships with others - as long as they were open about what they were doing. This is the time that swingers came about also, where married couples would swap partners (sexually).
  • The baby boomer generation brought on the standard american diet: full of fast food and pre-packaged meals. The days of going out to the garden to pick vegetables were no more, while canned vegetables became common.

Economic Impact

  • The demand for fast food and soda's has put a strain the human body and introduced coronary disease, diabetes, hypertension and obesity (chernoff 1995).
  • This generation is responsible for legalizing abortions and making divorce commonplace. These changes brought about the destruction of the traditional family
  • Boomers have always been at the heart of the divorce explosion. An example of this are the baby boomers Al Gore and his wife Tipper; they divorced after 40 years of marriage.
  • Baby boomers started to use Monsanto's Roundup in order to control weeds and pests. I remember seeing this in my father's garage growing up. It turns out that the glyposate is responsible for quite a few health problems. Later Monsanto introduced the public to rBGH and rBST. These growth hormones cause early puberty and have been linked to certain cancers.
  • Baby boomers brought the U.S into the age of consumerism. Yankelovich (as cited in Lipschultz, Hilt, Reilly, 2007) stated that about 70 % of the U.S household networth was controlled by the 50 and older age class. Because of this control over the money, spending on consumer goods was expected to increase into the billions in the year of 2010 (Lipschultz, Hilt, Reilly, 2007). Many businesses thrived thanks to the consumerism of this generation.
  • However, baby boomers found more meaningful ways to connect with their children than their own parents did. Because of this closeness – more children are returning home after college in order to save money and to try to get their career's started.
  • Hepatitis C is considered the baby boomer virus 1 in 30 baby boomers has Hepatitis C. The disease could have been contracted in many ways such as sharing staws, blood to blood contact, sharing needles, or even by unsterilzed equipment (Porter 2012).
  • Boomers have put the younger generation in a financial crisis- owing trillions of dollars in government debts.
  • Not every environmental impact was gloomy. Baby boomers are responsible for bringing about the Environmental Protection Agency, and Earth Day
  • Baby boomers are changing the face of technology also. According to Shannon Dauphin Lee (2014) there are now sensors that can alert the authorities if someone falls, and wireless monitors that track such things as insulin levels and heart rates.

Historical Impact

  • Due to frivolous habits and longer life expectancies, many member's of the baby boomer generation do not have the income that is needed to provide for long term health care. It is now up to the younger generation and the government to figure our how to provide the medical care that is needed for the ever growing baby boomer population. This would include being able to provide more in home nurses for those who choose to stay in their homes instead of going into a retirement home.

There have been many historical technological advances thanks to the baby boomers. A few examples are:

Dean Kamen :

  • A growing number of cities are trying to make changes in order to prepare for the aging generation. Some changes that have been made are : some buses now have lower doors, some grocery store chains are offering delivery, and wider sidewalks are being implemented.
  • This is the genius who invented the implantable insulin pump as well as the portable dialysis machine. Kamen also created the Segway Personal Transporter which we see mall cops “riding on these days (Dumaine 2013). Kamen is currently working on the Deka prosthetic arm. This arm and hand prosthesis is the first neurally controlled arm and hand that will perform , look and feel like a natural limb” (Pope n.d)

Dr. Robert Jarvik :

  • Dr. Jarvik changed history with his invention of an artificial heart that can actually be transplanted (Beltrame 2002).

Sonia Sotomayer :

  • She was appointed by President Obama to serve as the Second Circuit Judge. Sonia is the third woman to fill this role. Sonia is also the first Hispanic American to be appointed to this position.

Conclusion

Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs :

Margaret Hamburg :

Introduction

  • These two are responsible for the Apple computers, i-pods, ipads and I-phones that many people use every day. In fact the Apple -1 was the first personal computer. The world is at your fingertips on an I-phone. Not only can one send messages, search the web, send and receive email but it is now possible to complete graphs (using numbers) and PowerPoint presentations (using Keynote) right from the Iphone. Mac products changed history also by creating Face Time which allows individuals to chat face to face via apple product from anywhere in the world. Steve Jobs also created the hub which allows individuals to store digital music, pictures and videos.

Political Impact

  • This U.S. Food and Drug Administration commissioner required that restaurants list the calories in each of the food items listed on the menu's (Jaffe 2015).

These women / baby boomers are changing politics

Today we have laws in place in regards to abortions, rape and sexual harassment thanks to the women's liberation movement – led by the baby boomer generation.

History is important. It is imperative that people study those generations that have come before them, so that they may learn from their successes as well as their failures. The baby boomers may have messed up. It is the current generation that will pay for the boomers mistakes. However, every generation messes up. That is how society learns. Now, the current generation is being forced to look finances, and the medical system in order to come up with a plan for the future. Folks are taking a step back and attempting to make better choices. For example, many of the younger generation are starting gardens, and adding fresh fruits and vegetables into their diets. Solar power and hybrid cars are becoming more popular as well. Baby boomers are changing the way others view things. They are changing the face of retirement by working longer, starting new careers later in life and attending college. Baby boomers are hard workers and are showing the younger generations that it is never too late to reinvent oneself. Everything that the elders have done and continue to do effect each one of us.

There have been many baby boomers who have overcome boundaries. A few examples are:

There are many historical events that took place during the baby boomer years. An example is the end to racial segregation. African Americans, Caucasians, Hispanics (etc) were forced to figure out how to get along.

The current generation can not imagine what racial segregation was like. These days people of all nationalities, attend school, play and work together. Interracial marriages are the norm and bi-racial children are everywhere.

Hillary Clinton:

  • Nation's Chief Diplomat
  • During her role as the fist woman U.S senator she created a department within the U.S. Department of Justice for Violence Against Women (usnews.com).
  • Hillary Clinton will probably always be remembered for her active role in trying to diminsh world hunger and poverty.

It is common knowledge that once soldiers return home from war, women end up pregnant. World War II was no exception. According to historian Landon Jones “Almost exactly nine months after World War II ended, 'the cry of the baby was heard across the land,'” (History.com). The year of 1946, one year after WWII ended, is attributed with the beginning of the baby boom. Birth rates surged and more babies were born in this year alone, than any previous year in history (History.com). Twenty years later in 1964, “there were 76.4 million baby boomers that made up almost 40 percent of the nations population” (History.com). This generation has made a tremendous impact on society, and still continues to shake things up as they get older.

  • Hillary has plans to run in the next Presidetial election. If she wins, she will be the first female president in U.S history.

Condoleezza Rice :

  • In 1993 she became the not on the youngest but the first African American to be named Provost of Stanford University
  • A few years later not only was she was the first African American woman to fill the position of the White House national security advisor, but she was the second woman in history to serve as secretary of state (CNN 2015).

  • With baby boomers coming into retirement age, there is a strain on the healthcare system. Not only is there a financial strain which will be discussed later but also strain on the healthcare staff. Some elderly people end up having multiple health issues, which tends to be costly. With older baby boomers retiring, the younger replacements do not want to work the long shifts (Barr 2014). The younger generation of workers do not have the same work ethic, and prefer to work less hours in order to balance work with familial obligations. Another strain is that there are not enough geriatric physicians to handle the demand the growing numbers of aging baby boomers (Barr 2014).
  • On the flip side, with the increase need for medical care, and geriatric physicians – this could mean an increase in health care positions.
