Current Consequences of Vandalism

Vandalism is considered a Code A offense under the Ohio University Code of Conduct.

This could lead to disciplinary hearings, university probation, fines, and possible expulsion.

This is acceptable vandalism:

Solution 2

Adding a security foot patrol on each green.

Cons

Pros

Solution 2

  • The university would have to hire new security guards and pay their salaries.
  • Security guards would not be able to stop every act of vandalism.
  • Does not provide new regulations.
  • It would provide employment for new security guards.
  • Foot patrols would discourage vandalism outside residence halls.
  • Security officers might catch vandals in the act.
  • It would be campus-wide.

Solution 3

Mandate the use of walking in the main doors past the front desk of each residence hall.

Solution 1

Pros

Cons

Pros

Solution 3

  • Would be expensive for the university.
  • Cameras could be vandalized.
  • Could require maintenance over time.
  • Does not provide new regulations.
  • Students may feel it is inconvenient.
  • It does not provide new regulations.

Ohio University defines destruction of property as:

  • Would help deter vandalism if students know there are cameras in common areas.
  • Can help identify vandals if damage has occurred.
  • Would be campus-wide.
  • Could save money on vandalism in the long-run.
  • Is time and cost effective for the university.
  • Requires little implementation.
  • Would discourage vandalism because students will have to pass through common areas.

About the Problem:

This is not:

Intentionally or recklessly, but not accidentally, damaging, destroying, defacing or tampering with university property or the property or any person or business.

  • Vandalism on our campus is and has been an ongoing issue for many years.
  • This destruction of property costs time, money, and effort from university staff, OUPD, and residence hall maintenance.
  • This issue also affects the overall aesthetic appeal of our campus.

The nature of vandalism-

is problematic because students often don't consider the monetary cost of the damages or the repercussions that may affect their future.

Solution 4

For this project-

we considered all forms of vandalism included but not limited to graffitti, arson, and physical damage to buildings or facilities.

Creating a re-education campaign to inform students of the consequences of vandalism and encourage them not to.

Vandalism (n):

Deliberately mischievous or malicious destruction or damage of property.

Solution 1

Vandalism Facts

  • Average amount Ohio University spends on vandalism each year:

$95,872.57

Pros

Cons

South

  • Green with the most incidences of vandalism:

Solution 4

Adding video cameras to dorms and university buildings to monitor vandalism.

  • Does not provide an effective way to catch vandals.
  • Does not provide new regulations.
  • Would let students know the consequences of vandalism.
  • Students would be deterred because of the repercussions.
  • The information would be readily available across campus.

Our Solution Criteria

But first...

to implement a re-education campaign and allow only one entrance for university dorms.

1. The solution should be both cost effective and time effective for the university.

2. The solution must implement long-term regulations on the destruction or defacement of Ohio University property.

3. The solution should include preventative measures such as advertisements so people on campus can be made aware.

4. The solution should be be a campus-wide available to students and faculty.

What's already being done?

Vandalism Correlated to Alcohol and Drugs

  • A report from 2010 states that the problem has continued over many years and has increased in uptown areas.
  • Ron Brooks, and APD graffiti investigator, has asked for a $10 donation from many organizations and accepts additional donations to combat graffiti.
  • Athens Beautification Day, and annual event run by Student Senate, incorporates graffiti removal in their programming.

How can we help?

West

  • Drugs: 32

East

  • Alcohol: 442
  • Drugs: 25

Our Reasoning

  • Drugs: 20

Any Questions?

After analyzing our research and discussing different ideas, we came up with four solutions to help the vandalism problem on campus.

  • By having one entrance to the dorms, by the RA's office, we would limit the areas where students are entering the building unsupervised, which could help deter would-be vandals.
  • The re-education campaign would educate students about the consequences of vandalism, and encourage them to keep our campus beautiful.
  • Both options are cost and time effective for the university.

Implementation

Solution 3

You love your campus...

  • Change the locks on all dorm doors excluding the main entrance, so students don't have access to them with their dorm keys.
  • Ensure that students are informed of this change in policy, either through email or through RAs, to avoid confusion.

So keep it beautiful!

Implementation

Solution 4

  • Have OU programming or RAs design posters encouraging students against vandalism, and displaying the consequences of vandalism, to hang in residence halls and class buildings.
  • Make information involving vandalism and the repercussions readily available to students on the Ohio University website.
  • Have RAs cover vandalism in hall meetings to ensure all students are informed.
