Initial Outcomes

Teaming

  • Bimonthly discipline-specific inservice training for social workers, SLP, & OT.

  • The Nest team is made up of all Nest teachers, a SLP, OT, social worker, and principal or assistant principal.

  • The team meets for 90 minutes every week to discuss individual student cases, facilitate consistent use of strategies across all settings, and provide professional development in intervention practices.

Social development curriculum

Two classroom teachers, one certified in special education and on certified in general education, plus a cluster special education teacher to support children during special subjects and instructional lunch.

Key Elements of the Nest Program

Overview

  • A program for high functioning students with autism spectrum disorder that takes place in an integrated co-teaching class in a community school.

  • The Nest program helps children learn how to function well academically, behaviorally and socially in school and in their community.

  • The program provides an educational therapeutic environment in which the requisite supports are provided by a trans-disciplinary team of specially trained educators and therapists.

  • The idea of the "nest" is a to be a nurturing home that provides structure, support, and services in order to succeed inclusive settings.

  • The Nest program is currently implemented across New York City.
