Foundations of OpenAgile
Reflection: a pause in our activities where we gather data, stories, and observations about what we did Action: carry out the plans we have created Planning: apply what we learned to the systematic creation of a plan of action Learning: we carefully examine our reflections to "discover" new insights, relationships, failures, and conceptual changes Courage to plunge into the unknown Detachment from preconceived notions Search for principles underlying our work Love for the act of learning OpenAgile is a value delivery system based on 3 foundations that are essential to delivering value to stakeholders: Truthfulness The Learning Circle Consultative Decision-Making Truthfulness is a basic human capacity & everyone can develop their capability to be truthful transparency & visibility speaking honestly & being honest with ourselves harmony of our deeds & words seeking the underlying truth in any given situation learn from mistakes be creative find effective approaches to doing work Aspects of Truthfulness Truthfulness is required to: More than an Ethical Standard no lying, stealing, cheating... Also... no cutting corners or hiding the truth in any way Ultimately, Truthfulness builds trust and leads to reducing excessive bureaucracy and chaos Six Blind Men & the Elephant trunk, tusk, ear, side, leg, tail each has different understanding of the whole without sensitivity to other points of view, impossible to achieve unity of vision filters affect how we see the world and can leave us blind to new truths be open to the way other people perceive the world so that we can learn from them Four Steps Four Capacities a method for taking coherent action based on a unified vision Consultative decision-making is based on the following simple rules: Everyone is encouraged to contribute to the discussion; a diversity of views is welcomed No idea is owned by any individual and therefore it is okay to change your own mind Offence should never be given nor taken Personal attacks are absolutely forbidden; Aggressive interruption is considered bad behaviour Everyone should be able to fully express themselves in a frank, amicable, and courteous manner Requires a New Mindset After a decision is made, all those involved wholeheartedly support the decision truthfulness humility detachment competition debate arguing VS. a simple and practical model of effective learning Being open to receiving Guidance ensures that the Learning Circle is both organic and disciplined OpenAgile is a means for people working together to respond to change in a way that is more like an organic system rather than a mechanical system. Guidance plays a pivotal role in developing our capacity and can be applied to all 4 steps and all 4 capacities How do we develop the capability of truthfulness? Self-awareness Openness Keep Trying like all human capacities, practice makes perfect Unified Action http://www.openagile.com http://www.openagile.com The OpenAgile Primer by http://www.openagile.com/ is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 2.5 Canada License.
