Meet people in
REAL LIFE!
How I Use Social Media
That's me...
Not the company...
Because companies can't
socialise
Facebook is for friends and family
Twitter is for everyone
LinkedIn is for Business
A social networkingstory
1994
I enjoyed killing people
In DOOM!
CIX
I hung around and met @timbo_baggins and @dhmorton amongst others
In 1996 we created an online publishing group...
And soon we had a deal brokered through Guy Swarbrick from Microsoft...
So what did CIX teach me?
Friends first
Be helpful
Be open to new experiences and ideas
Don't slag people off
Remember that everything online is semi-permanent and will NOT be forgotten easily!
Don't be anonymous - your name is your personal brand... nurture it
Remember the Freemasons rules....
Social Media can start a relationship, but works best at the maintenance or expansion of real-life social contacts.

The history of Social Media Technology

Forums galore
Blogging
The WWW
So... what if you want to run the social network?
(something companies CAN do!)
If you're still living in the early 90's, and like hair shirts, use CoSY

Forum Software with social features - eg, vBulletin

BuddyPress
Perceptions of
Social Media @work
Great! Run campaigns, make people like us!
Or maybe they'll just get distracted?
Wonderful!
Confusing?!
Pointless?
Inappropriate?
BUT...!
you can use it well...
Less is sometimes more
Realise that social connections are more important than business connections
really really well
Have fun!
