Google's Self Driven car is based off technology from the DARPA Grand Challenge, an open challenge from Darpa to create an Autonomous Vehicle capable of navigating a course unaided. The lead engineer of the winning car of the 2005 challenge, Sebastian Thrun, was recruited by Google to combine his car's technology with Google's own street view to create a car capable of safely navigating city streets. -As of current, the car is capable of detecting various road signs, road dangers, obstacles, reacting to sudden events, and navigating to specified locations using google maps. -This system is beneficial because the AI does not suffer from disabilities found in humans, such as distraction, intoxication, road rage, slow reaction times, ect. -Google argues that a driver-less car would reduce energy usage, reduce traffic accidents, decrease traffic across crowded areas.
