Welcome to the note taking and planning asynchronous workshop.
- 00:04 - 00:07
We're gonna go over some note taking techniques that will help you in your classes.
- 00:09 - 00:14
So first of all, note taking this video from crash course study skills goes all over
- 00:15 - 00:16
uh different note taking techniques.
- 00:17 - 00:20
We can't watch it during this video because of copyright issues.
- 00:20 - 00:23
But all the links to it are available
- 00:23 - 00:24
on our
- 00:24 - 00:26
on all of our details for the
- 00:26 - 00:26
Eyre
- 00:26 - 00:29
workshop. So go back and check that out.
- 00:29 - 00:30
You can also
- 00:30 - 00:32
go to the uh pre
- 00:32 - 00:35
link that's on our website where you can
- 00:35 - 00:37
click through and watch the videos during that.
- 00:37 - 00:40
Essentially, it goes over things like taking general notes
- 00:40 - 00:42
and then making them more concise
- 00:43 - 00:45
uh doing things like making bullet points,
- 00:45 - 00:47
annotating and color coding your notes as well.
- 00:48 - 00:52
So watch that video to get an idea about different note taking strategies.
- 00:54 - 00:55
Next,
- 00:55 - 00:58
you're gonna practice some of those note taking strategies
- 00:58 - 01:01
on this video about building a moon base.
- 01:01 - 01:02
It's from
- 01:02 - 01:02
Zagat
- 01:03 - 01:04
which means in a nutshell.
- 01:05 - 01:10
So it's gonna go over how we would go about building moon based, things like
- 01:11 - 01:15
the cost, the steps involved in it. And
- 01:16 - 01:18
here you can see are my notes
- 01:18 - 01:19
based on reading
- 01:20 - 01:21
or watching the video.
- 01:21 - 01:22
So
- 01:23 - 01:27
generally I start off by taking some notes in general,
- 01:27 - 01:30
you can possibly do key points for your notes.
- 01:31 - 01:33
You can do shorthand. If that works better for you,
- 01:34 - 01:38
you can go through and revise your notes with annotations if that works better.
- 01:43 - 01:47
Here is sample notes based on me watching the video.
- 01:47 - 01:51
So how to build a moon base. I have general information about the costs,
- 01:52 - 01:53
the payout,
- 01:53 - 01:54
um
- 01:54 - 01:57
how we would explore
- 01:57 - 01:58
the
- 01:58 - 02:01
things involved in building and planning
- 02:01 - 02:04
trade work, all that, those sorts of things.
- 02:05 - 02:08
So the left side, we have my general notes and the right side
- 02:08 - 02:13
after which I put more details and all the yellow parts
- 02:13 - 02:17
that I highlighted it are meant so that you can
- 02:18 - 02:20
just focus on those and get a good sense of
- 02:21 - 02:22
uh the work overall.
- 02:23 - 02:26
And this is one way you might approach your note taking
- 02:26 - 02:27
when you
- 02:28 - 02:33
let's say read a chapter from a book or you watch a video or you
- 02:33 - 02:34
go to a lecture.
- 02:34 - 02:39
So you wanna get the most important things down and then even from that,
- 02:39 - 02:42
you would try to be more concise, more detailed.
- 02:42 - 02:45
Uh getting those little important details down
- 02:45 - 02:49
that will give you the most benefit when it comes to
- 02:50 - 02:54
doing your homework and doing all on your tests.
- 02:55 - 02:58
So not only is it good to have good note taking skills,
- 02:58 - 03:02
you also should have an idea of how to set up a schedule.
- 03:02 - 03:05
So you can make a weekly schedule, you can do something, for example,
- 03:06 - 03:10
uh with color coding, like you'd have green tasks that are your things,
- 03:10 - 03:13
you must do like homework and tests and things like that.
- 03:13 - 03:16
Yellow tasks are things that you could do but don't have to do.
- 03:17 - 03:17
Um
- 03:18 - 03:20
Like maybe that might be some of your more free time
- 03:20 - 03:23
stuff or a little bit extra setting here and there.
- 03:24 - 03:24
But
- 03:24 - 03:26
um, it would just be beneficial
- 03:27 - 03:30
for different reasons, but you don't necessarily need to do those things
- 03:30 - 03:31
for your class.
- 03:32 - 03:33
Um
- 03:34 - 03:38
Here we have an example of what a weekly schedule might look like.
- 03:38 - 03:39
We have it organized
- 03:40 - 03:42
from Monday through Sunday.
- 03:42 - 03:44
Uh You might not do it this
- 03:45 - 03:45
detailed,
- 03:46 - 03:48
but essentially you have your
- 03:48 - 03:53
classes, you have your work here. It even mentions time to work on homework,
- 03:54 - 03:54
uh,
- 03:54 - 03:57
time to study time for volunteer work or
- 03:57 - 04:00
playing video games or whatever your hobbies are.
- 04:00 - 04:03
So, in this case, it's a very detailed schedule where someone can
- 04:03 - 04:04
map out their whole week
- 04:04 - 04:06
for you. It might just be
- 04:06 - 04:10
when it, where your classes and when it should, you study and do homework,
- 04:10 - 04:13
um, whatever works best for you and it's good to kind of
- 04:14 - 04:16
plan it out and do your best to
- 04:16 - 04:19
stick to the schedule as much as you can. Of course,
- 04:20 - 04:22
it's gonna vary depending on
- 04:22 - 04:24
your course load and your workload.
- 04:24 - 04:28
But it's a good way to kind of gauge everything out and plan
- 04:28 - 04:29
for things.
- 04:30 - 04:32
Here is kind of a blank template here.
- 04:32 - 04:35
If you want your own template,
- 04:35 - 04:36
that print version of this prey
- 04:36 - 04:38
is available, you can print out the prey
- 04:38 - 04:41
and fill this out yourself. Otherwise you can make one
- 04:42 - 04:44
with a simple Excel document.
- 04:47 - 04:49
Here's our work cited for
- 04:49 - 04:50
the presentation
- 04:50 - 04:55
and the work site also includes the links to those videos that we referred to.
- 04:55 - 04:58
So it makes it a little easier for you to find them on the
- 04:58 - 05:02
youtube if you want to practice these notes stra taking strategies for yourself.
- 05:03 - 05:08
So on all that is the note taking and planning asynchronous workshop,
- 05:08 - 05:11
make sure you follow all the rest of the instructions
- 05:11 - 05:15
on our workshop page under the
- 05:15 - 05:16
note taking planning asy
- 05:16 - 05:17
workshop directions
- 05:18 - 05:21
and other than that, uh Thank you for your time.
