"Typography is what language looks like" -Ellen Lupton It's more than just letters on a page. It's more than just a font. Typography is the art, craft, and technique of type design. It all started in 1440 with Gutenberg's invention of the letterpress and m o v a b l e t y p e Typography is an evolution. ... and it continues to evolve. the x-height is the length of the lower case letters without ascenders or descenders. This is just an example of a body of text so you can see the effect different x-heights can have on the readability of it. Now I am just writing some more so it fills up more room on the pages. Okay I think this should be enough now. the smaller the x-height the more airy and open the type feels. a counter is the enclosed, or partially enclosed, area of a letterform. the counter of an "e" is known as an eye. * a descender is the part of the letterform that extends below the baseline. an ascender is the part of the letterform that extends above the x-height. a serif is the small strokes at the end of the main strokes of a letterforms serifs are one of the main distinctions between classifications of type. r r r slab serif old style sans serif the serifs are the same size as the strokes of the letter from, and are not bracketed. * the serifs are thin at the end, and are bracketed. * no serifs. * the baseline is the line where the body of letters rest. the cap height is the height of the capital letters. the point size is the area from the lowest descender of any letter to the highest point of any letter in a single typeface.
