RI High School Diploma Requirements
Junior Year October NECAP
Students must score partially proficient (2) or better in Reading and Mathematics
Senior Year October NECAP Retest
Students must score partially proficient (2) or
show improvement
in Reading and/ or Math
Senior Year Spring NECAP Retest
Students must score partially proficient (2) or
show improvement
from the initial administration of the NECAP in Reading and/ or Math
Other Approved Tests
After students have taken the NECAP twice, they are able to submit other approved test scores. A list on the RIDE website details other test options and the minimum scores required to meet the state assessment requirement.
Waiver and Appeals
Waivers are intended only for students for whom there is clear evidence that they have reached the required level of proficiency. Students
must be proficient
in grade 9-10 standards in order to receive a waiver.

Students and families retain the right to
appeal
overall graduation decisions.
NECAP State Assessment Graduation Requirement
Students have
multiple
opportunities to meet the state assessment requirement.
If students score substantially below proficient (1) in either Reading or Math, a
Progress Plan
is developed in partnership with the student and their family, and appropriate interventions are provided
until the requirement is met.

An improvement chart on the RIDE website shows the required NECAP scores needed to show “significant” improvement from the first/initial administration of the NECAP test to subsequent administrations in both Reading and Math. If a student shows this level of improvement, they have met the NECAP component of the graduation requirements.
The Spring NECAP Retest is an option for students. It is not mandatory.
To determine if a student is eligible for a waiver, there must be evidence that the student has:

Successfully completed all elements of their local graduation requirements
Completed the sequence of state testing requirements
Documented evidence of academic content mastery against grade 9-10 standards
Demonstrated effort

Students who meet this criteria may be eligible for School Waiver Committee consideration.

To assist in determining which students are eligible for a waiver, there is a waiver eligibility decision tree available on the RIDE website.
