Artist and Works ARTS 4th Grading Period Honore Daumier Philippine Artwork Symbolizing Social Issues The declaration of Martial Law gave birth to a new art style called “protest art”
A group of visual artists called themselves Social Realist took the lead in protest art
Their themes focused on social issues like human rights violation, environment pollution, unfair labor practices, corruption in government agencies, child and women abuse.
“MAN on FIRE” by ANG KIUKOK shows a shocking image of the human condition in anguish and despair. Environment Growth of population in the world each day affect the demand for clean air, enough space, and food to eat in order to survive.
Balance of ecosystem is greatly affected by deforestation as well as destruction of the coral reefs.
Problem on waste and its proper disposal adds to a serious state of the environment.
Endangered species of animals and plants continue disappear.

Social issues are usually addressed through campaign posters which serve as awareness and wake up call.
Alarming rate of child labor, famine and malnutrition.
Oppression of women and children portrayed through arts.
Some women artists create daring sculptures depicting their fight for their reproductive health and place in the
society.

Ex. Alma Quinto’s painting tackle sensitive social issues pertaining to women and children.

His style in painting was cubism of which he was an exponent. GUERNICA Guernica is considered as the greatest historical painting of the 20th century. • Some of the noted symbols and their representation follow:
Dying horse represents death of civilization, lamp for liberty, hope was symbolized by an eye with sun rays and light bulb, a Minotaur represents tyranny, distorted body face represent destruction of war.

The political gap between China and Japan is getting wider. The developing economic power of China is viewed as a threat by Japan. Some of the young people believed that Japan has apologized enough to other countries including Philippines for the suffering it inflicted during World War II.
One word brought together the desperate events of 2004- insurgency (not quite a revolution but more that discontentment)
In Iraq, the insurgents remain increasingly organized, angry, yet still distant from any semblance of real power.
In the US insurgencies of a different kind flourished, the young are riding a crest of discontentment.
In the Philippines, the government has been fighting insurgency for many years now since the discontented fled to the mountains, joined the forces with the communist party and waged intermittent war against the government.
The campaign for global peace is a common theme of art contests nowadays.
Peace Education is expressed through posters and sculptural work.
