Transcript: By: Mahek Kaur ENGLISH PITCH FUNDRAISER FOR ALS MY TOPIC MY TOPIC My topic is to research ALS and to apply my knowledge to create a fundraising event. This project will result in people getting awareness for ALS and it will help patients and families struggling with this disease to have a better quality of life. ALS Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis also known as Lou Gehrig’s is a disease that gradually paralyzes the body, by stopping the brain from communicating with it's muscles. WHAT IS ALS? WHAT IS ALS? MY GOAL MY GOAL My goal is to plan multiple fundraising activities with an overall goal of raising $10,000. STEPS STEPS In order to raise this money, I will have multiple different events. Firstly, there will be a dress down day for ALS. Next, I will hold a school assembly to educate people of ALS. Lastly, I will hold a Walk for ALS that will take place at West Humber in April. These events will have a goal to collectively raise $10,000. WHERE WILL THE FUNDS GO? WHERE WILL THE FUNDS GO? 50% of the funds I raise will go to ALS research to find a cure and to support clinical trials, and the remaining 50% will go towards helping patients and families struggling with ALS to afford quality healthcare, and access to medical and equipment needs. ALS funds have 2 major uses. Firstly, their is research to find cures and to determine better diagnostic measures, and secondly, their are funds to improve quality of life of patients. MY INSPIRATION MY INSPIRATION I chose this topic for my project because a member of my family struggled with this disease. It was very difficult for her family to manage her care, provide her costly equipment, and of course to have hope. INQUIRY RESEARCH AND INQUIRY The line of inquiry I will pursue will be to learn about the stem cell research being done to find a cure for ALS. I will also research to find information about about how ALS affects families, and how it is more than a physical imparity. APPLY MY KNOWLEDGE APPLICATION I will apply my knowledge, research, inquiry and communication skills to educate people about ALS. Even though it is the most common and deadliest neurological disease, the majority of people are unaware of it. I hope that I can use my knowledge to bring awareness to this illness as well as to raise funds to support those battling this disease.
