Transcript: Make You Feel My Love Summary Emma is a twenty-two-year-old college student who is obsessed with the idea of love. She is a single woman living in Miami who struggles balancing being a full-time student and working a part-time job at a local concert venue selling merchandise for local indie bands. She is very shy with guys that she is interested in romantically and longs for the day she can tell her family, who constantly reiterate the need for her to date, that she actually has a boyfriend. She has struggled with body image since middle school when she began to gain weight and her family teased her about it, not realizing the scaring consequences. She has conflicting thoughts about whether a guy would truly want to be with her or simply think she is beautiful while passing her on the street. Since the loss of her father, she yearns for a male presence. That combined with her insecurities cause her to struggle with relationships with men. Freshman year in college she becomes best friends with two of the most remarkable women she could ever consider friends. They keep her grounded in truth and faith and a hope of a better tomorrow. They support her throughout the end of her college career and try more than anything to make her realize that she is worth a thousand times more than she gives herself credit for. Her relationship struggles and anxieties intensify when her best friend Anna gets engaged. Then something life threatening happens to someone very close to her and sends Emma into a downward spiral of eating binges and random bouts of hysterical crying. Emma’s journey is a clumsy, heart-wrenching, eye-opening adventure of her uncontrollable yearning to find her true love and the unforeseen realization of finding herself in the process. Exerpt From Chapter One (Insight into Emma's mind) "The yearning in my heart tortures me to the point of complete exhaustion and then here I lie in my queen sized bed with an unnecessary amount of pillows and extra blankets, thoughts repeating themselves over and over in my head while my exhaustion is so crushing that my mind is restless. So here I lie in my blankets of perfect bliss with a heap of self-loathing, unbelief, unrest, and thoughts of how truly pathetic I have become has begun pressing down so strongly on my chest that I can barely breathe. It is as if I have become a victim of my own mind. I have this idea of what I want and I am just never going to get it." Example of Emma's Body Image Issues "I tried on my entire lack luster wardrobe mixing and matching everything in sight and thinking about how my stomach sticks out too much in this shirt, and my thighs look too big in these jeans; it’s a vicious cycle that apparently is never going to end. Some part of my body always looks grotesque and fat; either my arms, thighs, stomach, double chin, love handles, even my calves are too big unless I’m wearing heels that I could break my neck in." Adding the Miami setting loans the novel to the chick lit sub-genre "Big City Lit." Also, the Miami scene adds to Emma's body image anxiety. The Music Industry Global sales via the Internet, mobile phones and other digital methods rose to $4.2 billion in 2009. Sales of CDs fell by about 16 percent worldwide, causing overall industry revenue to decline to about $15.8 billion in 2009. Worldwide, the industry federation says, 95 percent of the music downloaded via the Internet is pirated, a percentage that has not changed over the past year. The music industy is a billion dollar industry and effects and influences millions of peoples lives each day. Therefore, my novel would target a huge audience that the Chick-Lit genre has avoided thus far in the genre's history Reasoning for the title: Make You Feel My Love Make you feel my love is a song by Bob Dylan. Some of the lyrics are, “I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue, I'd go crawling down the avenue, No, there's nothing that I wouldn't do, To make you feel my love.” This song embodies my heroine Emma in the sense that she would do anything to have someone to love and someone to love her back, she would “go to the ends of the earth” for that person, one of the last verses says. Also, I wanted to make the title relate to music in some way since that is a main theme throughout the novel. Make You Feel My Love appeals to the average college-aged woman who deals with everyday issues with family, body image, life in a big city, and the struggle to find the man of her dreams.
