The style of William Faulkner is very descriptive. Southern Gothic is a style of writing practiced by many writers of the American South whose stories set in that region are characterized by grotesque, macabre, or fantastic incidents. by William Faulkner Figurative Language Figurative Imagery: "She entered a small fat woman in black, with a thin gold chain descending to her waist." Describes and gives the image of how her lifestyle is, how her clothes fit her and her weight. Tone Style/Structure First-Person Narrator The language in The Yellow Wallpaper would be considered informal because the narrator speaks as if it is an everyday conversation that you would have on the phone. tone The story is being told from a narrator who is also a character within the story. "And it is like a woman stooping down and creeping about behind that pattern. I don’t like it a bit. I wonder—I begin to think—I wish John would take me away from here!" Simile (Pg.822): "Downstairs the library clock struck two. Its muffled thump sounded like an admonitory knock against her bedroom floor." (Pg.829):"She clutched her manuscript, carrying it tenderly through the crowd, like a live thing that had been hurt." Simile: "The ghost floated like a dragonfly during sunrise." " The faint figure behind me seemed to shake the pattern, just as if she wanted to get out. " The narrator knows the thoughts and emotions of ALL characters language style/structure The structure of The Yellow Wallpaper is diary entries which is very intimate. The style happens to be very descriptive and open in the beginning until the end when she becomes urgent; the narrator identifies her as being the woman trapped. April Showers In April Showers, the narrator mocks the main character for their over-confidence and over-the-top display of emotions. Symbol In A Rose for Emily, the tone can be considered sympathetic because the narrator never condemns Emily for her actions, such as refusing to pay her taxes or buying poison. The style/structure of April Showers is a satire because the narrator is ridiculing the main characters over-confidence and foolishness. The story is told by a narrator who is also a character in the story, so that the narrator reveals the plot by referring to this viewpoint character as "we" Formal Rose: Represents love and all Emily wants is to be loved. Transcript: April Showers April Showers is a story about a young writer, written by Edith Wharton. the story is about a young girl named Theodora who enjoyed writing. She started writing stories in her free time but her parents restrained her from living the life she wanted to live. One day she gets the courage to try to get one of her books published but later she finds out that her story was rejected. This story shows the struggle Theodora went through to try to get her writings published. "It hurts a bit just at first, doesn't it?" "O father!" He stood still, and the gleam of his cigar showed a face of unexpected participation. "You see I've been through it myself." "You, father? You?" "Why, yes. Didn't I ever tell you? I wrote a novel once. I was just out of college, and I didn't want to be a doctor. No; I wanted to be a genius. So I wrote a novel." The doctor paused, and Theodora clung to him in a mute passion of commiseration. It was as if a drowning creature caught a live hand through the murderous fury of the waves. "Father -- O father!" "It took me a year -- a whole year's hard work; and when I'd finished it the publishers wouldn't have it, either; not at any price. And that's why I came down to meet you, because I remembered my walk home." Theodora has sent her novel (500 pages) to the Home Circle( which is how Kathleen Kid got her start as a Novelist). As she awaits her reply of acceptance or denial. She helps her mother out with the chorus. Theodora tells everyone what she has accomplished. The day the Home Circle publishes their magazine Theodora goes and buys it and looks for her story but its not hers.
