is a pioneering primary science initiative that uses a distinctive team approach with primary teachers, primary students and volunteer scientist mentors working collaboratively as students conduct authentic scientific investigations to find answers to their own questions. Primary teachers: develop confidence, interest and competence in supporting students to investigate scientifically collaborate with practicing scientists promote the values of science and technology in local communities Primary students: experience increased success in authentic and personally interesting scientific contexts experience increased interest in and understanding of science and technology appreciate careers in science and technology value science and technology in everyday life Secondary students: experience the role of mentoring and enthusing younger students reinforce their interest in and learning of science and technology collaborate with practicing scientists to appreciate and value science and technology as a career and its relevance to everyday life Scientist mentors: inspire interest in science and technology amongst students share knowledge and expertise with school students and teachers gain appreciation of students' knowledge, skills, values about and attitude to science and technology acquire insight that may provide strategic value to employing organisations Collaborative Project: $ 50,000 grant from Ian Potter Foundation MyScience & Centre for Learning Innovation Achievements: Many major Young Scientist awards Increased capacity in primary teachers Schools have samples and benchmarked projects Research data Expanded resources to assist participants Students celebrate achievements to conclude the final phase of MyScience. ONLINE LEARNING FOR PRIMARY TEACHERS USING VARIOUS MEDIA INCLUDING VIDEOS MENTORING STUDENTS: CLASSROOM INTERACTIONS THAT SUPPORT AUTHENTIC SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATIONS Exemplary school projects may be entered into state-based award programs. BHERT Award for Best Education and Training Collaboration (2008) Australian Catholic University, IBM, NSW Dept of Education & Training, Western and Northern Sydney Regions, The University of Sydney, University of Western Sydney, ResMed and BASF Young Scientist Awards, Science Teachers’ Association of NSW. Employers value the mentoring benefits offered through MyScience. Research data collected during MyScience progressively inform future implementations of the program. Year 4 student award winners.
