Elements, Compounds & Mixtures! An element is a substance that contains only one kind of atom.
For example, in the element carbon, all the atoms are carbon atoms.
Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances in the laboratory. What are Elements? A compound is a “pure” substance that contains two or more elements.
Compounds are chemical combinations of elements with properties that are different from the elements that formed them. What are Compounds? Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter that make up everyday objects. The desks, the chair, the air, even YOU are made up of atoms! Atoms! A mixture is two or more elements or compounds which are combined physically, but no chemical reaction occurs. This means you can separate them again. What are mixtures? One of the most commonly used elements is Oxygen. For life of course! We wouldn't be here if it weren't for oxygen. What are they used for? - Elements! Did you know that Iron is the most abundant element on Earth? Helium and Hydrogen are the most abundant elements in the universe! The most common compound that is used by us humans is H2O. That's right, water! What are they used for? - Compounds! The two most common examples of mixtures are cement and salt water. What are they used for? - Mixtures! Elements are often chemically combined together to form a compound, therefore resulting in new properties for that specific compound. So many compounds are present in the things we use in our daily life! Some such examples are: Cement is a mixture of lime, cement, water, sand and other ground up solids and rocks. Cement is used to pave the roads and build sidewalks and sometimes used in buildings! Salt water is, as the name suggests, a mixture of salt and water! Element? IT'S A COMPOUND!! You now know the basics of Elements, Compounds and Mixtures! GOOD JOB!! Although there are only about 100 elements, there are millions of known compounds. NOTE: There are over 20 million known compounds. Salt water is used for many purposes. In industries they are used to cool down the equipment. In daily life they have various uses ranging from washing your mouth to sanitary purposes. Almost all of the elements found on the periodic table have their own uses! Some of them are used in daily life whereas others are reserved for rare and highly important uses.
The physical state of reactant and product molecules is written in parenthesis as (s) for solid, (l) for liquid, (g) for gas and (aq) for aqueous for solution.

The conversion of reactant to product represents by a single headed arrow directed from: Reading Chemical Equations A chemical equation represents by using these chemical formula of reactants and products molecules. reactant product H2CO3(aq) → H2O(l) + CO2(g) H2SO3(aq) → H2O(l) + SO2(g) A water molecule, or H2O, is two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. Compounds have different properties than the elements that make them up.
