Simplify. Omit. What can you take away?
What can you remove? Abbreviate?
Repeat a color, shape, image, idea. Think about
how you can influence or control a sequence or pattern.
What else can be added to your image, idea, or object?
What can you separate and focus on? Use a small part of the object. What can you detach and still suggest the whole?
Separate, divide, split, dissect. Chop it up. How can you break it apart?
Link it. Connect. Unify. Merge. Combine ideas. Combine Shapes. What kind of synergy can you create by combining things?
Pull The Old
SWITCH-A-ROO
Transfer
Empathize
Substitute
Put the object in a new place or time. Relocate the idea. Use it for another purpose.
Switch places with your object. Put yourself in it's shoes. Imagine it with feelings or human qualities. BECOME YOUR ART
Exchange, Switch, Replace. What other idea or object can you substitute for part or all of your object?
Bend the truth. Falsify. Tease. Mislead or confuse. Use Irony.
Deny. Reverse. Satire. Argue. Use a contradiction. Contradict physics. Contradict art rules. Contradict the Status Quo.
Ridicule. Poke Fun. Mock. Create an oxymoron or conundrum. Make it a visual paradox or caricature.
Cross-fertilize. Mix-breed. Mix up your subject with an improbable mate. Mix up the elements and principles.
Transform. Evolve. Depict your subject in a state of change. Create a mutant.
Bend it. Twist it. Melt it. Burn it. Crumple it. Tear it. Disintegrate it. How can you torture your subject?
Compare. Draw Associations. How is your subject like another? Try logical and illogical comparisons.
What If? Imagine your subject is bizarre, outlandish, surreal circumstances. Be random. Get weird.
Build a myth around your object. Use myth or pop-culture references to infuse into your object. Connect your subject to another well-known story/event/thing.
How can your subject be transformed into a symbol? Put stripes to make it a candy cane. Have a dove carry it to symbolize peace. Apply a common symbol to your art.
