Boardmaker is a software program that uses clip art of picture communication symbols which are used in creating printed communication boards, device overslays, worksheets, and schedules. Mayer Johnson has just come out with a new version, and it has much more diversity than previous version. This list is to offer support and ideas to parents, teachers, and SLPs that use it with their children or students.

So, what is this crazy idea?
Wanted to get kids more involved in learning.
My kids can do this!
Books
This needed to be the kids' project
students are mostly non-verbal
needed a communication system that allowed students to be involved in project
gave "ownership" of project
allowed students to use materials above their reading level
Could sort by tag (animal, desert, etc…)
Diigo allows you to create groups/lists

Research materials provided to students
Diigo.com
"liked" facts were written down
"liked" facts used to complete worksheet
returned to research if they couldn't answer a question
first asked if it was about their animal
then asked if they "liked" it
http://tarheelreader.org
students can write & publish their own books
easy interface
very accessible
http://ed.voicethread.com
create student narrated slideshows
used single switch device to allow students to
"say" the narration
used completed worksheet to make sentences
read to students & picked 5 to create presentation
student read or used switch to "record" their presentation in voicethread
group activity
wrote books about topic
used to reinforce facts learned
switch accessible

Voicethread Presentations

Tar Heel Reader Books
Conclusions
Conclusions
Students enjoyed the process
really got into their animal
learned a lot about the desert
given sentences about their animal and distracters
Students were able to pick the sentence about their animal with approximately 80% accuracy
Empowered students to create a
presentation that was theirs
a versatile tool
allowed students more opportunities to
pick or edit visuals used within the presentation
utilize other online tools (i.e. Glogster.com, Google Presentation) for physical presentation

I'm not the only one!
Classroom in Oak Park, IL
give them choices within one category
not open ended
don't have enough experience to know everything they like
Just shows that we need to give them more experiences like this!
also took time to pick pictures that they liked
