How we use Facebook
Facebook in 1st Grade
Status Updates
Students synthesize the information from a lesson, and then update the class status.
Event Invitations
Whenever we have a class event an invitation is sent through Facebook.
Parents are able to RSVP, get important information and ask questions about the event.
Notes
Facebook notes are a great way for us to communicate with parents.
These notes allow us to share more formal information than what may be used in a status update.
Private Messages
Private messages are akin to email, but the parent doesn't have to sign into something else.
Pictures
We can upload albums directly to Facebook.
We can also use the pictures application to show off student work.
Videos
We can show friends of our Facebook page exactly what we are doing in the classroom with moving pictures and sound.
Students Communicating with Parent While at School
Perfect for that moment when a student really needs to share something with mom and dad.
Why Facebook?
Over 750 million Facebook users worldwide. (300 million when we started this project)
More than half our parents were already using Facebook.
Facebook is a one-stop shop for parents and other Facebook friends.
Privacy - lots of settings
Privacy
Permission slips - offered with different levels of involvement.
Password protected - students can only access at school under supervision.
No one else has the password.
Accepting "Friends" - only parents, verified family members, teachers, principals, school officials accepted.
Settings
You can customize the privacy settings to protect the students, and the "Friends" of the page.
Who's who on Facebook
In a note to all "Friends" we introduce all of the people who will have access to the page.
Hiding Friends -
Controlling Ads
The teacher can hide ads that would be innapropriate for students.
