Fresh thinking is urgently needed. We can’t continue to tinker at the edges, particularly in the face of an economic downturn. Without bold new approaches, our public services will be over-stretched by the shortterm demands of the recession and overwhelmed by the long-term challenges of the future. What alternatives do we have to radical innovation?

Think computers, the internet, open-source... and now p2p. The scale of the p2p is at the level of Marx's capitalism and socialism, but it is less a manifesto and more a description of current practice as it manifests across all aspects of society. Michel monitors current practice, globally, not just within technology but as it manifests in production, marketing, business, government, theory and practice at all levels. He has aggregated a substantial collective of pioneering agents, each innovators and authorities in their own industry.

facilitating emotional engagement through design
matt coombes
matt's thesis
A quietly spoken man, coming to design at the peak of his creativity, exploring well beyond the edge of design. Even glancing contact with Phillips, indicates he is on the fast-stream of next generation design. Bringing people together isn't easy, not through an object. Matt is moving away from designing objects, but rather the interface with the object as emotional aspects of being. His designs are sure to influence a generation.

There was a person that found themselves picking at their thumb cuticles not long after a friend died. This nervous habit continues to this day. Since then several people have mentioned a similar habit. The Cuticle Protector is a basic metal covering ring that no longer allows access to the cuticles.
The Numb Knuckle Duster came from a chat about not expressing one’s anger as well as feeling numb. So, it has an aggressive outer appearance with its protruding spikes, while on the inside there are two more spikes that push into the wearer’s hand, particularly when they clench their fist.
The original idea behind the Reality Leash was the losing of the awareness of reality, that is, the world that goes on around them. This simple device could allow one to remain attached to reality by clipping onto a solid inanimate object. Through further discussions the notion of keeping a track of or keeping connected to friends and/or family was very important, so I amalgamated these ideas.
The Single Tear Catcher was inspired from an experience I had of shedding a solitary tear at a funeral.

Then we got to the initial steps of Esp, and the early days of the Plex. Tav mentioned "Espra", which was his Freenode based first attempt at making code for the Plex, but concluded that "Freenet was kinda the wrong technology to back". The Plex is to be a new network based around people's individual views of content. As an example, he noted that everyone who attended the WTF on that day did so because they knew someone who had recommended it. It's that kind of trust network that he wants to model on the Plex. Someone asked about the specific kinds of trust metrics afterwards, prompting him to slip into a dense piece on the attack-resistentiality of his trust metric, and which was in delightful contrast to his unspecific and meandering main talk, which was nevertheless appropriate for the eclectic crowd.

He mentioned the six degrees of separation principle, and was questioned on the matter and had to explain that it meant that everybody knows everybody else on the planet through a path of six acquaintances or less. In summary, he said that "trust is fundamental".
Tav is an interesting guy. I met him and the Espians summer 2007 when they were conducting their 24 weeks experiment. I was delighted to find other adults who were thinking as big; their objective to create a multi-billion dollar company by simultaneously generating funding streams, exponentially increasing user base and writing a powerful social utility called ESPRA. The ESPRA system is founded on an comprehensive new economy which Tav calls the Espian Ecology.
