Being successful during finals starts NOW. Planning ahead and taking care of yourself are the keys to being successful during this stressful time. Get Information— Know what will be covered on the final exam. What will the format be? Are there review sessions? Know how your performance on the final exam will affect your final grade. Start Early— Write all of your exams, final papers/projects, or assignments in your planner. INCLUDE the time, as it is different from class time. Develop a 2-3 week timeline for completing all final papers/projects. Talk to your professors early about exam conflicts such as two finals scheduled at the same time. Schedule your Time— Study early for your exams. Start 10 days in advance. Avoid cramming, it is not a productive method in regards to retaining information. Schedule your study time in a fashion that works for you, but make sure it is scheduled. Study Tips— Study in hour blocks... 45 minutes to study, 15 minutes of break. Study actively in a way that makes you manipulate and think about the material so that you will understand and remember it. Review old exams and assignments. SLEEP— A rested body performs better. Do not pull all-nighters, you may fall asleep during the exam. Stay Healthy— Get rest, eat well, and be smart about your time. Make sure you have one hour a day of activities that relieve stress such as exercising, etc. Use Caution with Medications— Only take what is prescribed. Don’t start new medications, and moderate the use of stimulants such as coffee and soda. STRESS!!! Expect some stress, it is normal. Schedule time to relax, rest, exercise and have some fun. Avoid people who are stressed out, it is contagious! Learn to say no, focus your energy and priorities. Think positive. Take deep breaths and don’t forget to keep things in perspective. www.uni.edu/advising
