For years to come, Kpop music flourished and became wildly popular across Asia. Many Americans were unaware of this style until 2012 when PSY (Park Jae Sang) released Gangnam Style.
In 1992, Kpop reached a new level with a band called Seo Taiji and Boys. This group became known for their rap and pop mixture and their unique choreography and dance moves that make k pop what it is today.
In 1989, Lee Soo Man founded SM Entertainment which has become the largest Korean Pop entertainment company to date. South Korean musicians imitated American pop music.
Gangnam Style was a global hit. It poked fun at traditional Kpop music. It was nothing like western pop music or American style videos. On YouTube, it remains the most viewed video of all time with 2 BILLION views.
In the Asian world, South Korea dominates in the area of pop music, film, and video games. In America, the dramas and the music is becomming more popular.
The musicians of South Korea took this type of music and created bands that would play at GI clubs. During the 1960's, the Beatles became popular in South Korea. Many bands sang the Beatles' songs. In the 1990's Kpop as we know it became popular as we know it today.
Korea began to expand their types of music. Instead of traditional Korean music, other types such as Swing, Trot, and Jazz became popular. In the 1950's after the Korean War, some American soldiers stayed in South Korea. They brought with them popular music from the United States.
According to the founder of MNET (Music Network in South Korea) Shin Hyung-kwan- he believes that Kpop can break the language barrier and win over the American people.
Under the leadership of Park Chung-hee, SouthKorea began to develop better relations with Japan and the United States leading to a free market and new businesses. Many businesses like Hyundai, Samsung, and LG are still around today. With the influence of Japan and the United States, music began to change and flourish.
Even if you can't understand the lyrics, the sound and the beat is enough to overcome the difference in culture. Its growing popularity in the United States in very much due to social media.

Historically Korea has been a depressed, third-world country. The north part of Korea was under the influence of Russia with communism and the south was more in line with the United States. During the Korean War (early 1950’s) and after, this division became more apparent, however, all of Korea was still struggling economically and politically. Following the war, there was growth in literacy and land reform.
In South Korea, the pop culture revolves around music, television (mostly dramas), and fashion, including cosmetics and clothing. Most Americans are not aware of the type of Korean culture; however, there is a rise in popularity of Korean pop music around the world. It is making its way to America.
According to Rolling Stones, Kpop could easily be a part of America's top 40 markets.
Popular Culture (also known as “Pop Culture”) is a term used to describe the tastes of the majority of people in a region or a country. It is particularly known to be what is popular among young people. It includes music, television, film, food and fashion.
Kpop bands work very hard to learn the rules of the game especially those that make them competitive with American groups.
I chose this topic because I love Kpop and I am happy that Kpop is making its way to America. It is interesting to me how the history of kpop is changing so that now it is spreading to America. K-pop bands are winning awards once thought for only Americans and kpop concerts are selling out in the United States. Korean fashion is on the runways in American cities and Korean films are able to be streamed in America. The culture of Kpop is expanding to the US and hopefully is growing.

SM Entertainment's main acts, including Girls Generation, Super Junior and SHINee performed a 6 hour concert in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
a popular Kpop group, EXO, recently came to America were they played in Dallas,LA,Chicago,and NY, all shows were sold out.
