All right, so in this video, we're gonna be going
- 00:03 - 00:05
over spacing in professional academic grading.
- 00:06 - 00:08
Um, you might wonder why this video so long?
- 00:09 - 00:12
We're just talking about spaces and probably a couple of
- 00:12 - 00:12
words, right?
- 00:13 - 00:15
It's not even a notes document because it's so simple.
- 00:16 - 00:19
Well, we're going to spend a little bit of the
- 00:19 - 00:23
video talking about academic and professional writing or the right
- 00:23 - 00:24
way to right now.
- 00:24 - 00:26
Let me first start with one of my pet peeves.
- 00:28 - 00:28
You ready?
- 00:30 - 00:36
I hate teachers that say, this is the Onley way
- 00:36 - 00:36
too right?
- 00:38 - 00:38
Hey Hmm.
- 00:40 - 00:41
Because here's the thing.
- 00:44 - 00:45
It's not, and you know that.
- 00:45 - 00:48
And I know that I don't have to use capitalization
- 00:49 - 00:53
when I am messaging my friend on Facebook, I don't
- 00:53 - 01:03
I hardly ever dio, and sometimes I forget a capital.
- 01:03 - 01:06
Sometimes I forget punctuation or I spell a word wrong
- 01:06 - 01:08
on social media, right?
- 01:08 - 01:12
Or when I'm texting my dad sometimes sometimes I will
- 01:12 - 01:17
use ah bunch of exclamation points to show I'm really
- 01:17 - 01:18
excited. Eight.
- 01:21 - 01:26
And none of that is wrong, but we lose points
- 01:26 - 01:27
forward in English class.
- 01:29 - 01:37
That's because we are working with two different audiences and
- 01:37 - 01:38
for two different purposes.
- 01:40 - 01:47
So our when we are writing in English class there,
- 01:48 - 01:54
there's a right way to write because or there isn't
- 01:54 - 01:54
the right.
- 01:55 - 01:58
So we'll be back up on that when we write
- 01:58 - 02:01
in English class were given rubles like capitalization and punctuation,
- 02:01 - 02:08
commas and sentence structure and all this stuff because that's
- 02:09 - 02:17
what is expected for an academic or professional for those
- 02:18 - 02:20
of you that are wanting to go straight into the
- 02:20 - 02:22
job force instead of going on to university or go
- 02:23 - 02:23
into the military.
- 02:24 - 02:27
That's what is expected of an academic or a professional,
- 02:30 - 02:31
uh, environment.
- 02:32 - 02:34
You're expected to use thes skills.
- 02:36 - 02:37
You're not expected to use them all the time.
- 02:38 - 02:41
But in my class and other classes you are that
- 02:41 - 02:44
includes when your messaging me, too, because I'm not your
- 02:45 - 02:49
best friend and we're not going to go to karaoke
- 02:50 - 02:53
on Friday night or whatever you are doing with your
- 02:53 - 03:00
friends. Um, and I miss karaoke, but so you wanna
- 03:00 - 03:04
make sure that even when you're messaging me, you're still
- 03:04 - 03:08
trying to use correct punctuation, capitalization, all the rules and
- 03:08 - 03:09
things we talked about in class.
- 03:11 - 03:14
Now we should also talk about purpose, right?
- 03:15 - 03:17
Because you'll probably notice.
- 03:18 - 03:25
Some of the authors we read use grammar and capitalization
- 03:26 - 03:27
and sometimes even spelling.
- 03:28 - 03:30
That doesn't really make sense, right?
- 03:30 - 03:37
It's wrong dramatically, and that's because they're not writing in
- 03:37 - 03:40
a professional or academic environment.
- 03:40 - 03:44
We are reading them in a professional academic writing, but
- 03:44 - 03:47
very few people right for classrooms.
- 03:49 - 03:51
Very people write a book and below and are like,
- 03:52 - 03:55
Ooh, bunch of 10th grade or ninth grade.
- 03:56 - 03:58
We're third graders air going to sit around and read
- 03:58 - 03:59
this right.
- 04:00 - 04:03
They write the book to be entertaining.
- 04:04 - 04:07
Ah, lot of authors write the book to make money.
- 04:08 - 04:12
Um, because you can't produce art without money.
- 04:13 - 04:19
Um, but they write the book to make a statement.
- 04:19 - 04:21
Very rarely is it written for an audience.
- 04:22 - 04:26
However, we are reading it in a professional academic writing.
- 04:27 - 04:33
So that's why when author makes an error, it's not
- 04:33 - 04:34
always an error.
- 04:35 - 04:41
It is a they are writing in a different way
- 04:41 - 04:41
than we are.
- 04:42 - 04:45
So when I say words like the spacing rules that
- 04:45 - 04:47
we're gonna go over in just a moment, it's not
- 04:47 - 04:51
that you're what you've been doing is wrong, or if
- 04:52 - 04:54
you mess this up outside of class, it's wrong.
- 04:55 - 04:57
But when you mess it up inside a class, it
- 04:57 - 05:01
is wrong because it's an academic or professional environment.
- 05:02 - 05:04
So let's just get onto it with words.
- 05:05 - 05:09
There's a single space between each word boom Just their
- 05:09 - 05:10
space is space.
- 05:11 - 05:11
Always space.
- 05:12 - 05:16
Easy thing to get right Never lose points on that
- 05:16 - 05:17
Another thing.
- 05:17 - 05:18
We should never lose points on sentences.
- 05:20 - 05:25
There is no space before punctuation, but that what?
- 05:30 - 05:34
But there is always a space after punctuation.
- 05:35 - 05:36
Now it didn't show up here.
- 05:36 - 05:39
But just so you know, if you're listening to the
- 05:39 - 05:40
video, you'll know this.
- 05:41 - 05:46
The key word for this video is shall the key
- 05:47 - 05:52
word for this video is shall That's S h A
- 05:52 - 05:58
l l Shall you write that down?
- 05:59 - 06:03
Key word for the video is shall S h l
- 06:03 - 06:11
l. Let's move on to paragraphs for our last little
- 06:11 - 06:13
bit. So after each paragraph, there should be a line
- 06:14 - 06:14
break to have a line break.
- 06:15 - 06:17
You will need to hit the enter button twice before
- 06:17 - 06:19
starting your next paragraph so that there is a clear
- 06:19 - 06:20
line between each paragraph.
- 06:21 - 06:23
Paragraph should also be indented by hitting the tab key
- 06:24 - 06:27
and written using double space so some quick things on
- 06:27 - 06:28
that you'll notice.
- 06:28 - 06:31
In between these two paragraphs, there's like a blank line
- 06:32 - 06:32
where there is no text.
- 06:34 - 06:39
We should always have that in between each paragraph, so
- 06:39 - 06:41
it shouldn't be just right under.
- 06:42 - 06:44
There should always be that blank lines called a line
- 06:45 - 06:50
break. We should also indented paragraphs and use double space.
- 06:50 - 06:53
The way we use double space on Google docks or
- 06:53 - 06:55
onward is by going.
- 06:55 - 07:01
So in this video we talked about what academic professional
- 07:01 - 07:02
writing is.
- 07:03 - 07:05
We talked about words on the spacing between them.
- 07:06 - 07:08
We talked about the spacing between sentences, and we talked
- 07:08 - 07:09
about the spacing between paragraphs.
- 07:10 - 07:12
I'll see you in the next video, and until then,
- 07:13 - 07:13
keep learning.
