Hi, I'm Lisa.
- 00:03 - 00:05
And for my final project, I will be talking about
- 00:06 - 00:07
some health factors of my hometown Fishers, Indiana.
- 00:08 - 00:11
I have lived there ever since I was little until
- 00:12 - 00:14
I moved to Bloomington for college.
- 00:16 - 00:19
Eso some general information about Fisher's It is a growing
- 00:19 - 00:20
city. Um there.
- 00:21 - 00:22
Over the past few years, there have been a lot
- 00:23 - 00:27
of construction of apartment complexes, um, leader, areas, restaurants.
- 00:28 - 00:30
We were very excited about the opening of Ikeya and
- 00:30 - 00:31
top golf.
- 00:31 - 00:32
They're always super crowded.
- 00:32 - 00:34
People love coming out and having a good time there.
- 00:35 - 00:38
Another big thing about fissures that I will get a
- 00:38 - 00:38
little bit more into later.
- 00:39 - 00:40
But there are two rival schools.
- 00:41 - 00:41
HSC and fishers.
- 00:42 - 00:46
Andi. Competitiveness between these two for sports is always super
- 00:46 - 00:50
exciting. On dhe, you can definitely see some factors that
- 00:51 - 00:52
we talked about in class with sports.
- 00:53 - 00:56
Um, in terms of sports is play and sports as
- 00:56 - 00:57
a thrill of competition.
- 00:58 - 01:01
Um, students at these schools whenever there is, um, bloodstock
- 01:02 - 01:04
week, like we like to call it Whenever these two
- 01:04 - 01:07
teams went against each other, we would have friendly trash
- 01:08 - 01:12
talk during those games, but we would always come back
- 01:12 - 01:14
to being friends at the end of the competition, which
- 01:14 - 01:15
is where that sort of play comes in.
- 01:18 - 01:21
So to start off with the schools, the main to
- 01:21 - 01:24
our Fishers High School and HSC, they are rivals, but
- 01:25 - 01:25
they're both amazing schools.
- 01:26 - 01:29
They're part of the Hamilton Southeastern School District, which is
- 01:29 - 01:31
one of the top rating district in Indiana.
- 01:31 - 01:34
That's actually one of the reasons my family decided to
- 01:34 - 01:35
move to Fishers.
- 01:36 - 01:40
Um, Fishers High School has the highest graduation rate in
- 01:40 - 01:42
the state, but HSC is right there behind them.
- 01:42 - 01:48
Both of them are high ranked in things like reading
- 01:48 - 01:50
and language for frequency as well as mathematics.
- 01:52 - 01:55
Um, Fisher size High School also offers the Ivy program,
- 01:56 - 02:01
which eyes very helpful for kids who want Thio kind
- 02:01 - 02:03
of get that step ahead for college as well.
- 02:05 - 02:09
Um, in terms of food and fishers, I think this
- 02:09 - 02:11
is a place that fishers is doing very well in
- 02:11 - 02:12
terms of health factors.
- 02:13 - 02:16
Um, the percentages of residents that are food insecure are
- 02:16 - 02:22
quite low, Um, because there is a lot of access
- 02:23 - 02:25
to food in terms of restaurants and grocery stores.
- 02:25 - 02:28
So in terms of restaurants, there are a lot of
- 02:28 - 02:31
new replaces opening up that offer healthier options such as
- 02:31 - 02:34
the Baby Bob Asian Grill Rise Blaze pizza.
- 02:36 - 02:38
Um, some of those places, like rise specifically, are more
- 02:38 - 02:40
expensive, so that is one thing that makes it a
- 02:41 - 02:42
little bit less accessible for people.
- 02:43 - 02:45
Also, all of these places are kind of in the
- 02:45 - 02:49
same area as those fast food chains like McDonald's and
- 02:49 - 02:53
Wendy's. So, um, there is some competition there with people
- 02:53 - 02:57
might still choose the cheaper, easier option of the fast
- 02:57 - 02:57
food chain.
- 02:58 - 03:02
Um, but this does also encourage people who live around
- 03:03 - 03:05
that area to maybe try something new for a healthier
- 03:06 - 03:10
option. Um, in terms of grocery stores, their grocery stores
- 03:11 - 03:16
laid out throughout Fishers, Um, and personally, they are not
- 03:16 - 03:19
far from my house, but they're also, um, right next
- 03:20 - 03:21
to a bunch of different neighborhoods.
- 03:22 - 03:25
Um, in the summer, Fishers also offers a farmer's market
- 03:26 - 03:29
that offers us a variety of produce that we want
- 03:29 - 03:30
to purchase.
- 03:30 - 03:34
Um, for those people that are food insecure, we do
- 03:34 - 03:37
have food pantries and offers for free and reduced lunch
- 03:38 - 03:41
is, um, and the three countries are well supplied because
- 03:42 - 03:46
students from all schools in the district will participate in
- 03:46 - 03:52
food drives all throughout the year in terms of physical
- 03:52 - 03:56
activity. I think this is a place that fishers of
- 03:56 - 03:57
doing fairly well.
- 03:57 - 03:59
There are some places that it can improve, which I
- 03:59 - 04:04
will go into, um, and to start with the driving
- 04:05 - 04:09
Everyone in Fisher's drives, Um, and it is actually one
- 04:09 - 04:13
of the social determinants of Hamilton County's physical environment, being
- 04:14 - 04:16
a very low ranking, one of the lowest rankings that
- 04:17 - 04:20
it has because nobody really walks or bikes anywhere.
- 04:20 - 04:21
So I think that's one place that the community could
- 04:22 - 04:29
improve because if they put out um, bike lanes and
- 04:29 - 04:34
whiter sidewalks to encourage people to, um move themselves to
- 04:34 - 04:35
get where they need to go, I think that would
- 04:35 - 04:38
really improve the air quality of the community.
- 04:39 - 04:42
Um, and they would also help people get moving a
- 04:42 - 04:43
little bit more.
- 04:46 - 04:49
Um, but the good thing about physical activity is that
- 04:49 - 04:51
there are a lot of parks around fishers.
- 04:51 - 04:53
Um, they're always super crowded.
- 04:53 - 04:55
I see families going there all the time when the
- 04:55 - 04:59
weather is nice, um, and the 24% of residents that
- 04:59 - 05:02
live within a 10 minute walk is, um, fairly equal
- 05:02 - 05:05
across the board of people of all age and race
- 05:05 - 05:10
groups. Um, one thing that I'm going to do to
- 05:11 - 05:14
help improve my community in terms of the health factor
- 05:14 - 05:16
of food is to work with some people to create
- 05:17 - 05:22
a recipe book filled with nutritious, easy, affordable recipes that
- 05:22 - 05:22
are good for beginners.
- 05:23 - 05:26
Um, that is quite strict, but also a great way
- 05:26 - 05:28
to kick start a new, healthy lifestyle.
- 05:31 - 05:33
Thank you for listening to my final project for K
- 05:34 - 05:34
1 50.
- 05:34 - 05:35
I hope you enjoyed it.
