  • 00:00 - 00:04

Hey, y'all Welcome to my mini lecture on genre.

  • 00:04 - 00:10

I am super excited to transition into this next phase of our english 101 course.

  • 00:10 - 00:12

We are going to be listening to a

  • 00:12 - 00:16

true crime nonfiction podcast together called cereal.

  • 00:16 - 00:21

And first we need to consider what genre serial falls into.

  • 00:21 - 00:23

    And when I say genre,

  • 00:23 - 00:27

I'm referring to a particular style of writing or artwork or

  • 00:27 - 00:31

media that shares a set of characteristics that are recognizable.

  • 00:31 - 00:37

So consider some of these really common genres like core romance or comedy.

  • 00:38 - 00:40

You know when you're watching a comedy, right,

  • 00:41 - 00:45

the movie is funny or at least it's trying to be funny.

  • 00:45 - 00:49

Hopefully you are laughing and you know when you're watching

  • 00:49 - 00:52

a horror movie because well if you're like me,

  • 00:52 - 00:55

you're hiding behind a blanket with your eyes squeezed shut.

  • 00:55 - 00:58

So that's what a genre is a particular type of

  • 00:58 - 01:02

writing or media with characteristics that we can recognize.

  • 01:03 - 01:08

Now let's consider the difference between fiction and nonfiction.

  • 01:08 - 01:11

So while fiction is created from the imagination.

  • 01:12 - 01:15

Take, for example, Haruki Murakami's short stories,

  • 01:15 - 01:19

we can't assume that any of Murakami's stories are based on real life.

  • 01:19 - 01:22

Though many authors do clean inspiration from the world around them.

  • 01:23 - 01:27

Nonfiction, however, is based on real people, real events,

  • 01:27 - 01:30

real stories that occurred in the real world.

  • 01:30 - 01:36

Keyword real, in other words, fictional work does not claim to be true.

  • 01:36 - 01:41

While nonfiction does claim to be true and based in reality as we understand it.

  • 01:41 - 01:45

So that distinction between fiction and nonfiction is really important.

  • 01:45 - 01:48

As we begin listening to season one of the serial podcast,

  • 01:48 - 01:52

which is a nonfiction investigative documentary

  • 01:52 - 01:54

that has split into multiple episodes.

  • 01:54 - 01:56

It's nonfiction that still tells a story.

  • 01:56 - 01:58

So it's based in narrative but it's a

  • 01:58 - 02:02

story about real people and that's the difference.

  • 02:02 - 02:03

    That's the key

  • 02:03 - 02:07

serial also falls into the true crime genre.

  • 02:08 - 02:10

The narrator is examining a crime

  • 02:10 - 02:13

that's taken place in the real world.

  • 02:13 - 02:15

The murder of Haman Lee is real.

  • 02:16 - 02:19

    Adnan Syed's imprisonment is real.

  • 02:19 - 02:20

    Sarah.

  • 02:20 - 02:24

Our narrator is also real and honest as she attempts to investigate this

  • 02:24 - 02:29

crime from so many different angles while still trying to maintain her objective

  • 02:30 - 02:31

    um perspective

  • 02:32 - 02:35

and true crime is super popular in our society.

  • 02:35 - 02:39

We see true crime podcast series, books, netflix,

  • 02:39 - 02:45

netflix documentaries like making a murderer or the jinx and as a culture,

  • 02:45 - 02:47

we are fascinated by true crime.

  • 02:48 - 02:52

But the true crime genre is also really controversial.

  • 02:52 - 02:54

Sarah and her cereal team are trying to tell

  • 02:54 - 02:56

this story and talk about this murder case in

  • 02:56 - 02:59

a way that honors the fact that everybody is

  • 02:59 - 03:02

a real person and everything happened to real people.

  • 03:03 - 03:08

They're really walking a fine line between honest investigation and exploitation

  • 03:08 - 03:11

because that's something the serial team has

  • 03:11 - 03:14

been occasionally accused of sensationalizing a murder.

  • 03:15 - 03:20

So keep this genre shift in mind as you continue with your cereal listening journey.

  • 03:20 - 03:26

These are real people. A murder actually took place until next time. Keep list
