Hi, everybody.
- 00:03 - 00:04
My name is Patty Fisher.
- 00:04 - 00:05
I'm the kindergarten teacher.
- 00:06 - 00:09
And, um, I'd like to share with you some of
- 00:09 - 00:13
the things that I found really cool and interesting in
- 00:13 - 00:13
chapter five.
- 00:14 - 00:17
Developing habits of thinking.
- 00:18 - 00:20
And here are some of my friends in kindergarten.
- 00:21 - 00:22
And, of course, we do a lot of hands on
- 00:22 - 00:27
activities in kindergarten and because our kids are not doing
- 00:28 - 00:30
a whole lot of writing and we do a lot
- 00:30 - 00:34
of picture drawing to record our thoughts, I had to
- 00:34 - 00:39
reinvent, um, some of the graphic organizers to fit what
- 00:40 - 00:40
we do.
- 00:40 - 00:41
So here we go.
- 00:42 - 00:46
Um, I found, um on page 62 the graphic organizer.
- 00:46 - 00:47
That was on one sheet of paper.
- 00:48 - 00:51
I redrew it so that we could do it as
- 00:51 - 00:54
a class And what I would do when, um, we
- 00:54 - 00:58
were finished with an activity or, um, one of the
- 00:58 - 01:01
activity. One of the things that we did, I would
- 01:02 - 01:05
ask the whole class to fill this in, and I
- 01:05 - 01:08
would, um, I made it bigger.
- 01:08 - 01:10
Obviously. It's on a big poster border, a big piece
- 01:10 - 01:12
of paper, and I would say, Okay, how did we
- 01:12 - 01:14
feel? How did that make you feel and I would
- 01:14 - 01:16
go through each step of that so I would have
- 01:16 - 01:18
to make it bigger and we would do it as
- 01:18 - 01:18
a class.
- 01:18 - 01:20
And then maybe, perhaps, towards the end of the school
- 01:20 - 01:23
year, they could start filling that in themselves individually.
- 01:26 - 01:30
Um, there were a couple and I'm the fluency that
- 01:30 - 01:32
I thought, Actually, there were a lot of them, but
- 01:32 - 01:34
I thought the one in the fluency, some of them
- 01:34 - 01:35
in the fluency, were really great.
- 01:36 - 01:39
I loved, um, some of the questions that we would
- 01:39 - 01:39
ask as brain breaks.
- 01:40 - 01:42
We do a lot of brain breaks in kindergarten with
- 01:42 - 01:44
the music and the dancing and getting up and moving.
- 01:45 - 01:49
But while we're standing in line, um, while we're just
- 01:49 - 01:51
waiting a few minutes for things to go on, um,
- 01:52 - 01:54
I thought these were really good and a couple of
- 01:54 - 01:57
them that I changed to fit migrate level would be
- 01:57 - 01:58
What is the question?
- 01:58 - 02:01
Kindergartners never know the difference between what is a question
- 02:02 - 02:03
and when do you want to tell something?
- 02:04 - 02:06
So we one of the things that we might do
- 02:06 - 02:13
is ask what is the question and list questions or,
- 02:13 - 02:15
um, I made this 1 to 2 chart one so
- 02:15 - 02:17
we could use it more than once and save some
- 02:18 - 02:22
space. And, um, I put our content standard up at
- 02:22 - 02:22
the top.
- 02:23 - 02:25
I can name words with and on one side.
- 02:25 - 02:28
We could start with two syllables words with two syllables.
- 02:29 - 02:31
And then on the other side or on another day
- 02:31 - 02:34
or another time, we could do words that end with
- 02:34 - 02:37
at or rhymes or word family words, whatever you want
- 02:37 - 02:37
to call them.
- 02:39 - 02:43
Yeah, Another thing that I thought was great was in
- 02:43 - 02:44
the originality section.
- 02:45 - 02:48
And, um, get the kids to think about, um when
- 02:49 - 02:52
we're talking about social studies and our social studies time
- 02:53 - 02:56
and, um, what would happen if we didn't have a
- 02:56 - 02:56
stop sign?
- 02:56 - 02:58
What would happen if we didn't have rules to follow?
- 02:59 - 03:00
What would that be like what?
- 03:00 - 03:02
And then lied that into what would happen if we
- 03:02 - 03:05
didn't have rules in our classroom and get them to
- 03:05 - 03:07
thinking about outside of the classroom and how that's going
- 03:08 - 03:08
to help them in the future.
- 03:10 - 03:14
And then finally, one of the other, um, strategies that
- 03:14 - 03:16
I picked was the zoom out strategy, and I thought
- 03:16 - 03:17
that was fabulous.
- 03:17 - 03:19
And I never thought about this, but I think it's
- 03:19 - 03:19
really cool.
- 03:20 - 03:22
And this is from the book tops and bottoms.
- 03:23 - 03:26
And, um, I would take, um, one of the pictures
- 03:26 - 03:28
from the story, and I just picked this one at
- 03:28 - 03:34
random. And to introduce the story, I might use different
- 03:34 - 03:38
parts of the picture and, um, give it to him
- 03:38 - 03:40
bits and pieces at a time to see if they
- 03:40 - 03:42
know what the story might be or to get them
- 03:42 - 03:44
excited for it for the next week when we're going
- 03:44 - 03:45
to do the story, or the next day when we're
- 03:46 - 03:48
going to do the story and put it kind of
- 03:48 - 03:51
up as a puzzle piece each, um throughout the day
- 03:52 - 03:54
and see if they know what the story is, and
- 03:54 - 03:56
then that that's the way I would introduce the story
- 03:57 - 03:57
to them.
- 03:57 - 03:58
So I thought that was kind of fun.
- 04:00 - 04:03
So kindergarten is a fun place to be, and I
- 04:03 - 04:05
thought a lot of these ideas I could bring down
- 04:05 - 04:08
to our level in kindergarten and use them.
- 04:09 - 04:09
Thank you
