Hello and thank you for joining me today in
- 00:03 - 00:07
this present segment about creating effective micro learning content.
- 00:09 - 00:10
First, a little bit about me,
- 00:10 - 00:14
my name is Rachel Trenchard and I work in customer success enablement at mural
- 00:15 - 00:18
mural is a collaborative intelligence company that
- 00:18 - 00:20
seeks to create a culture of effective collaboration
- 00:21 - 00:24
and increase the innovation capacity of the enterprise,
- 00:24 - 00:28
connecting and empowering everyone to deliver business driving outcomes.
- 00:29 - 00:32
My role specifically is to equip our mural customer success team
- 00:33 - 00:34
with the tools and resources that they
- 00:34 - 00:37
need to help customers accomplish their goals.
- 00:38 - 00:40
One of the primary ways I do this
- 00:40 - 00:42
is by creating micro learning content.
- 00:42 - 00:44
It keeps our team members informed about the latest
- 00:44 - 00:48
features and offerings and an efficient and timely manner.
- 00:48 - 00:50
In this session I'm going to walk you through
- 00:50 - 00:53
my top six tips for creating content that sticks
- 00:56 - 00:57
1st a little bit of a definition
- 00:58 - 01:03
as the name implies. Micro learning is micro or mini blocks of learning content
- 01:03 - 01:07
that contrast more traditional training methods such as our or
- 01:07 - 01:09
sometimes multi hour long enablement
- 01:09 - 01:12
meetings or lengthy certification processes.
- 01:13 - 01:16
The format for micro learning content is often video,
- 01:16 - 01:19
but it can also be text infographics in platform
- 01:19 - 01:23
notifications or a number of other on demand digital mediums
- 01:24 - 01:26
Though this tip is most relevant to video,
- 01:26 - 01:30
no matter the format the content in each Micro Learning training
- 01:30 - 01:33
should take a user a maximum of 10 minutes to complete.
- 01:34 - 01:38
So for this first tip, when it comes to micro learning content, keep it micro,
- 01:38 - 01:39
keep it short
- 01:39 - 01:42
and be sure to limit each piece to strictly
- 01:42 - 01:45
need to know information that addresses a specific problem.
- 01:48 - 01:50
This leads to tip number two
- 01:50 - 01:52
which is to have a clear goal for your content.
- 01:53 - 01:55
It's not enough for your training to be short if it's not
- 01:55 - 01:58
actually providing a solution or giving a helpful piece of information.
- 01:59 - 02:02
Two common missteps in this area are either creating
- 02:02 - 02:05
content that covers multiple topics in a single video
- 02:06 - 02:08
or creating something that is an incomplete idea
- 02:08 - 02:11
that can't be used as a standalone resource.
- 02:11 - 02:14
You can overcome both of these by actually starting with
- 02:14 - 02:17
the goal in mind and then backing into the content.
- 02:17 - 02:20
This way your learners know going in exactly
- 02:20 - 02:22
what the intended outcome of the training is.
- 02:23 - 02:24
Mhm.
- 02:25 - 02:28
Next up we have a tip about content location.
- 02:28 - 02:32
Learning content is most relevant when it's immediately applicable.
- 02:32 - 02:34
So once you have a clear purpose,
- 02:34 - 02:38
make sure that your content lives where your learner will most need to access it
- 02:39 - 02:43
at mural, we put this into practice within our customer success playbooks,
- 02:43 - 02:47
these are usually mural templates that include facilitator instructions
- 02:47 - 02:49
right next to the main customer focused content.
- 02:50 - 02:53
The templates can be accessed and downloaded
- 02:53 - 02:56
immediately and customer success team members can
- 02:56 - 02:58
delete out any instructional content as they're
- 02:58 - 03:01
making updates and before delivering to customers.
- 03:02 - 03:05
This allows the success team to learn or brush up on how to use a template
- 03:06 - 03:07
before presenting it to a customer
- 03:08 - 03:12
without requiring them to dig through a ton of other sources to know how to do. So,
- 03:15 - 03:17
Tip # four is to mix up the format,
- 03:18 - 03:20
good content in the right place.
- 03:20 - 03:22
Seems like the perfect formula for effective enablement,
- 03:23 - 03:25
but if you're always using the same teaching medium,
- 03:25 - 03:28
you're at risk of losing learner's attention.
- 03:29 - 03:32
Try to keep team members engaged by mixing up the format.
- 03:32 - 03:35
Maybe you have some gifts alongside your videos,
- 03:35 - 03:37
have an infographic or even a game,
- 03:38 - 03:42
anything that breaks up the monotony and keeps your content from blending together
- 03:42 - 03:43
and feeling stale
- 03:46 - 03:47
on that note,
- 03:48 - 03:50
content is generally more engaging and effective
- 03:50 - 03:52
when it has an interactive component.
- 03:53 - 03:57
While this can be incorporated by using a game or something like a quiz app,
- 03:57 - 04:01
even just providing a no pressure environment for a learner to test out the
- 04:01 - 04:04
information can be invaluable for improving their
- 04:04 - 04:06
competence and confidence with the material.
- 04:09 - 04:12
And finally, I couldn't come from a collaborative intelligence company
- 04:12 - 04:15
without a recommendation to make your content collaborative
- 04:16 - 04:20
giving team members a flexible fun and inclusive way
- 04:20 - 04:23
to contribute to your content will help them as individuals
- 04:23 - 04:25
and it will also help your wider team,
- 04:26 - 04:30
Try creating a space for discussion and commentary alongside your training
- 04:30 - 04:34
materials so team members can encourage and inspire one another.
- 04:35 - 04:39
You can even use this as a way to get feedback that enhances what you already have.
- 04:39 - 04:42
It's a surefire way to increase participation
- 04:42 - 04:43
and improve innovation
- 04:46 - 04:50
and this concludes my micro learning tips. Thanks so much for joining me.
- 04:51 - 04:54
I hope the content resonated with you and maybe you even learned something new.
- 04:55 - 04:57
