ahoy and welcome to stem stories with Mr Ewing.
- 00:04 - 00:07
I'm Captain stem the gray beard, and I'm here to
- 00:07 - 00:10
teach you some stem learning experiences.
- 00:14 - 00:18
No one welcome you to the family stem Fun day
- 00:18 - 00:19
challenges member.
- 00:21 - 00:24
Our classroom may look a little bit different because the
- 00:24 - 00:25
whole world now is our classroom.
- 00:26 - 00:28
And I'm not there to have flirting with you.
- 00:29 - 00:31
So you're gonna grab some people in your family, and
- 00:31 - 00:34
you're gonna do some experiences and learning along with them.
- 00:35 - 00:36
So what I want you to do is go ahead
- 00:37 - 00:40
and grab your family and let's get to doing some
- 00:40 - 00:45
challenges. So today we're creating a cannibal, something very dear
- 00:46 - 00:50
to old gray haired heart right here.
- 00:51 - 00:54
Because the catapults or one of the big tools we
- 00:54 - 00:56
like to live use on the pirate ships.
- 00:57 - 00:59
So we're gonna be creating.
- 00:59 - 01:02
I'm gonna show you a couple of different versions, and
- 01:03 - 01:04
I want to see if you can challenge yourself.
- 01:05 - 01:08
Now, remember, we gotta use things that we confined at
- 01:08 - 01:11
home. So what I need for you to do is
- 01:11 - 01:14
see if you got some popsicle sticks laying around and
- 01:15 - 01:19
you're also going to need to make sure you use,
- 01:19 - 01:23
which got So maybe you have some chopsticks or some
- 01:24 - 01:28
utensil plastic utensils, anything that's hard and straight that will
- 01:28 - 01:28
work for you.
- 01:28 - 01:30
And we're gonna need some rubber bands.
- 01:31 - 01:34
And then we're gonna need cap if you choose to
- 01:34 - 01:38
use that in your final catapult and we're gonna need
- 01:39 - 01:40
to put it together.
- 01:40 - 01:41
So what?
- 01:41 - 01:44
The version I'm gonna show you here is using just
- 01:44 - 01:48
a very simple you become when we get some shoes
- 01:48 - 01:51
deliveries. So I'm gonna pull out the fork and I'm
- 01:51 - 01:55
gonna actually pull out the spoon and I'm gonna take
- 01:55 - 01:55
a rubber band.
- 01:56 - 01:59
Now, I'm gonna put those back to back because that's
- 01:59 - 02:03
gonna actually help us create the tension that we need.
- 02:04 - 02:09
So then you take a rubber band and just very
- 02:10 - 02:14
wildly rapid, rapid, rapid, rapid, rapid until it is super
- 02:15 - 02:16
tight all the way around.
- 02:16 - 02:20
No, depending on the size of a rubber band and
- 02:20 - 02:23
the ability to wrap it around it may take you
- 02:23 - 02:26
a couple turns and if you're struggling with it, you
- 02:26 - 02:27
can always ask an adult to help you.
- 02:28 - 02:30
So a couple more twists around.
- 02:30 - 02:31
I want to get This is Titus.
- 02:31 - 02:34
I can There we go and there is our fork
- 02:35 - 02:37
and our spoon together with its river band.
- 02:38 - 02:40
Now, do you make the catapult work?
- 02:41 - 02:43
I'm just gonna take a pencil and I'm gonna slide
- 02:43 - 02:45
it in, like so.
- 02:46 - 02:50
No, that actually creates the tension for our catapult.
- 02:51 - 02:54
And if we bring it down and actually want to
- 02:54 - 02:58
get in and there there we go, and then we
- 02:58 - 03:01
can put our catapult down and release it.
- 03:01 - 03:04
Now that's the simplest version that you could make.
- 03:04 - 03:06
Got a couple of the versions that I want to
- 03:06 - 03:08
show a little bit more difficult to make.
- 03:08 - 03:11
But I know that you could do it now if
- 03:11 - 03:16
using Popsicle sticks gluing or taping a cap down on
- 03:17 - 03:18
the end actually will help.
- 03:18 - 03:21
And actually, the more leverage that you can get between
- 03:22 - 03:27
the spoon and the fork or Popsicle sticks, the better
- 03:28 - 03:30
leverage you're going to make with your catapult.
- 03:31 - 03:34
So here's some other versions that I want to show
- 03:34 - 03:36
you a little bit tricky and take a little bit
- 03:36 - 03:36
more supplies.
- 03:37 - 03:41
So remember, use what you got and make what you
- 03:41 - 03:44
got. So here's one that was created with four pencils
- 03:45 - 03:47
to give it a sturdy base and then using that
- 03:47 - 03:47
plastic spoon.
- 03:49 - 03:50
That's the kept full piece.
- 03:51 - 03:54
And then I thought this one was actually pretty amazing.
- 03:55 - 03:57
Takes a lot of Popsicle sticks, or you could use
- 03:57 - 03:58
pencil pencils as well.
- 04:00 - 04:02
Now let's make a game out of it.
- 04:03 - 04:03
Catapults fun.
- 04:05 - 04:09
Look, do something where you actually have a target.
- 04:10 - 04:12
So use a plate.
- 04:14 - 04:17
You could actually write numbers on these index cards labor
- 04:17 - 04:21
around and actually tried to catapult objects to the different
- 04:22 - 04:22
locations have used plates.
- 04:23 - 04:25
You could put numbers on a next, actually keep score,
- 04:26 - 04:29
and then you and your family members could compete against
- 04:29 - 04:29
each other.
- 04:30 - 04:34
Now, here's where you want to be Really careful.
- 04:34 - 04:36
What you gonna use your catapult?
- 04:36 - 04:39
Four. Let's try to find things that are soft, maybe
- 04:39 - 04:41
some pom poms, even some marshmallows.
- 04:42 - 04:45
And it's time of year, maybe some jelly beans, so
- 04:46 - 04:48
use those to catapult into a target.
- 04:49 - 04:51
You can also take an index card, fold it much
- 04:51 - 04:55
like this and write some folded like that l shaped
- 04:56 - 04:58
right, right.
- 04:58 - 05:01
Some numbers on, um and then aim form.
- 05:01 - 05:05
And when your catapult material hits it, you score that
- 05:06 - 05:10
point. So remember safety first catapults are to be shut
- 05:11 - 05:14
shot. The objects towards things that are not living.
- 05:15 - 05:17
Do not shoot your catapult towards your brother, your sister,
- 05:18 - 05:19
your mother, your uncle.
- 05:19 - 05:20
Your grandfather will.
- 05:20 - 05:20
He's sleeping.
- 05:21 - 05:22
Definitely not any animals.
- 05:23 - 05:24
These are to keep you safe.
- 05:25 - 05:27
So being to make sure you're shooting your catapult away
- 05:28 - 05:32
from another human or living being also make sure using
- 05:33 - 05:33
something soft.
- 05:34 - 05:36
That way, if you do accidentally hit someone with a
- 05:36 - 05:39
little piece of yarn bomb pom, pom, it's not really
- 05:39 - 05:39
gonna hurt.
- 05:40 - 05:41
All right, But be careful.
- 05:41 - 05:44
And if you need to wear some protective goggles, that's
- 05:44 - 05:45
always important.
- 05:46 - 05:48
So but most important, have some phone with your catapult
- 05:48 - 05:51
today. And maybe you could dress up like a pirate
- 05:52 - 05:57
and actually do some catapulting off your pirate ship and
- 05:57 - 06:03
has always remember to send in some photographs because I
- 06:04 - 06:06
want to see the learning that you're doing grow and
- 06:06 - 06:06
have a step
