Hello. My name is Haley Hawkins and this is my
- 00:03 - 00:04
casework project presentation.
- 00:09 - 00:12
Here is the history of the case I chose for
- 00:12 - 00:12
this project.
- 00:15 - 00:18
The client I chose for this project is a 16
- 00:18 - 00:19
year old African American male.
- 00:20 - 00:22
He dominantly lives in Northeast Charlotte.
- 00:24 - 00:27
Currently he has no residence as his parents kicked him
- 00:27 - 00:28
out before he was detained.
- 00:29 - 00:33
Um and he is being detained on felony armed robbery
- 00:33 - 00:34
and first degree kidnapping.
- 00:38 - 00:40
So I stated he has no current legal residents.
- 00:41 - 00:44
Uh He was living on the streets until recently.
- 00:45 - 00:51
He was taken in by a family friend, our friends,
- 00:51 - 00:54
family and he does have criminal history.
- 00:55 - 01:00
He has a bunch of misdemeanors, adjudicated charges probation and
- 01:00 - 01:03
he has been on a monitoring system through the charlotte
- 01:03 - 01:05
Mecklenburg Police Department.
- 01:07 - 01:08
He does have other siblings.
- 01:08 - 01:11
He has six other siblings to actually reside with the
- 01:11 - 01:13
parent and the other four in the foster care system
- 01:14 - 01:17
through Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services.
- 01:23 - 01:26
So the clinical assessment and diagnosis for this client.
- 01:30 - 01:32
So the client was automatically referred to our agency once
- 01:33 - 01:37
detained. Um if they don't retain their own personal defense
- 01:38 - 01:41
lawyer, then they automatically go to council for Children's rights.
- 01:41 - 01:44
They decide to keep or give the case to another
- 01:44 - 01:44
pro bono.
- 01:46 - 01:50
The presenting problem is that they're being detained, but also
- 01:50 - 01:54
that the attorney stated that they have recurring charges of
- 01:54 - 01:58
the same offense is without a stable living situation in
- 01:58 - 01:59
a history of substance abuse.
- 02:02 - 02:04
So the client does have a previous diagnosis of O.
- 02:05 - 02:05
D. D.
- 02:05 - 02:05
And I.
- 02:05 - 02:05
D. D.
- 02:06 - 02:07
That was given through cardinal innovations.
- 02:11 - 02:15
This client also has prior treatment services, including youth Recovery
- 02:15 - 02:19
court in home outpatient therapy and Thompson's residential.
- 02:20 - 02:22
After being diagnosed with I.
- 02:22 - 02:22
D. D.
- 02:22 - 02:23
And O.
- 02:23 - 02:23
D. D.
- 02:23 - 02:28
The client um went to Thompson's residential and actually left
- 02:28 - 02:30
Thompson's during a mental health crisis.
- 02:32 - 02:36
The client though has successfully completed youth recovery court and
- 02:36 - 02:39
was in the process of in home outpatient therapy when
- 02:39 - 02:41
their parents kicked them out of the home.
- 02:46 - 02:50
The first impression of this client is that they're going
- 02:50 - 02:50
to need.
- 02:51 - 02:56
So substance abuse recovery services, a stable residents, therapeutic services
- 02:56 - 02:57
and a stable support system.
- 02:58 - 03:04
So initially there's that reliance on the family friend to
- 03:04 - 03:07
be support for the client and there's already trust built
- 03:07 - 03:07
in that relationship.
- 03:09 - 03:13
There's also the wants of the client to live a
- 03:13 - 03:17
more law abiding life but due to the circumstances that
- 03:17 - 03:20
have been presented to him poor judgment and his developmental
- 03:22 - 03:27
stage. Uh He's in this recurring cycle of being detained,
- 03:27 - 03:30
being charged and going through the legal system.
- 03:34 - 03:38
So in hopes of providing more benefiting services, we moved
- 03:38 - 03:38
to treatment.
- 03:42 - 03:43
The first thing we want to do in treatment is
- 03:43 - 03:46
get the client a new comprehensive clinical assessment.
- 03:47 - 03:48
Their current C.
- 03:48 - 03:48
C. A.
- 03:49 - 03:51
Is a few years old and it predates current concerns.
- 03:52 - 03:57
Um According to allianz behavioral health they should always get
- 03:57 - 03:58
a new C.
- 03:58 - 03:58
C. A.
- 03:59 - 04:03
If there's been a significant change there's new concerns I
- 04:03 - 04:05
met treatment needs or a prior change in service.
- 04:06 - 04:09
Almost all of these relate to this client.
- 04:10 - 04:11
So we're going to ask for a new C.
- 04:12 - 04:12
C. A.
- 04:13 - 04:15
The next thing is we're hoping after the C.
- 04:15 - 04:15
C. A.
- 04:15 - 04:18
And after um learning more about our client.
- 04:19 - 04:21
Maybe the client can go to a new ideas residential.
- 04:22 - 04:26
Uh They provide residential treatment for substance abuse recovery.
- 04:27 - 04:31
They also allow visitors which allows the client to keep
- 04:32 - 04:34
in contact with his current support system.
- 04:36 - 04:38
We're hoping for a proper interim guardian.
- 04:39 - 04:43
As mentioned the parent kicked the client out.
- 04:43 - 04:46
Doesn't want anything to do with the client, staying with
- 04:47 - 04:47
a family friend.
- 04:47 - 04:49
but the family friend hasn't been able to sign any
- 04:50 - 04:53
legal documents, so we are hoping to get that transferred
- 04:54 - 04:54
to the family friend.
- 04:55 - 04:56
And if not, we'll go to the Department of Social
- 04:57 - 05:02
Services. And finally, we always want to go by the
- 05:02 - 05:03
client's wishes and their desires.
- 05:04 - 05:06
No matter what we think is in the best interests,
- 05:07 - 05:10
the client always has the final say because we are
- 05:10 - 05:14
their defense attorney and we do represent their desires and
- 05:14 - 05:15
needs and wants.
