Hello, everybody. Welcome to the University of Warrick
- 00:05 - 00:10
and to the Department of Applied Linguistics, where together in our team,
- 00:10 - 00:13
we work to help students and teachers
- 00:13 - 00:16
improve their understanding of the English language,
- 00:16 - 00:18
developed English language skills and
- 00:18 - 00:21
also to develop intercultural understanding.
- 00:22 - 00:28
My name is Penny Mousavian and behalf of my colleagues. I extend a very warm welcome
- 00:28 - 00:30
to your two week online programme,
- 00:31 - 00:35
English for Global Communication Academic Skills,
- 00:35 - 00:38
which we very often referred to as simply e g.
- 00:38 - 00:40
C. Online.
- 00:41 - 00:44
We're looking forward to working with you in the next two weeks,
- 00:44 - 00:46
which are going to be hard work,
- 00:46 - 00:51
but we hope that you'll enjoy the course and benefit from what you're going to learn
- 00:52 - 00:54
over the next 10 sessions.
- 00:54 - 00:57
We will give you the opportunity to develop the most
- 00:57 - 01:01
useful academic skills that you'll need to succeed in a university
- 01:02 - 01:07
using English language in speaking, listening, reading and writing.
- 01:07 - 01:13
But we're also going to cover other skills as well, which I'll explain as we go along.
- 01:14 - 01:19
The model of the course is a flipped learning model.
- 01:20 - 01:22
I wonder if you know what that is.
- 01:23 - 01:29
The flip learning model offers you between 1.5 and two hours of study offline.
- 01:30 - 01:35
And then you will join your tutors in your live sessions for 90 minutes each day.
- 01:37 - 01:37
Mhm.
- 01:37 - 01:41
What is flip learning? Well, let me help you to understand.
- 01:41 - 01:46
So in a normal classroom in a traditional setting,
- 01:46 - 01:51
normally you'd come to the class to learn new knowledge.
- 01:51 - 01:55
You'd remember that knowledge, understand it, and then
- 01:55 - 01:59
you go away and do homework tasks
- 01:59 - 02:03
to help you analyse, evaluate and create your own knowledge.
- 02:03 - 02:06
The flipped classroom turns that on its head,
- 02:08 - 02:09
you do all your
- 02:10 - 02:14
learning, your understanding and remembering outside of the classroom.
- 02:15 - 02:18
And that gives us the time in the classroom
- 02:18 - 02:19
to help
- 02:19 - 02:21
develop what you've learned.
- 02:21 - 02:24
To analyse your understanding and to do some
- 02:24 - 02:28
of the higher order learning skills that you need
- 02:28 - 02:29
teachers help with.
- 02:30 - 02:30
So
- 02:31 - 02:34
whereas in a traditional classroom,
- 02:34 - 02:39
the teacher is the sage on the stage and you simply listen to a teacher
- 02:39 - 02:41
in the flip classroom.
- 02:41 - 02:42
Well,
- 02:42 - 02:46
the teacher becomes more of a guide on the side because
- 02:46 - 02:49
you're watching your lectures at home at your own pace,
- 02:50 - 02:54
and you can ask questions of the teacher before you get to the class.
- 02:54 - 02:56
And then during the class
- 02:57 - 03:02
the teacher will help you to understand the learning in more depth,
- 03:02 - 03:06
and you have the opportunity to work with peers in small group work
- 03:07 - 03:11
so that you can deepen your understanding of what you've learned offline.
- 03:11 - 03:16
So what's important is that you engage with
- 03:16 - 03:19
the materials that you have to study offline
- 03:20 - 03:24
because they give you the knowledge that you'll need to use
- 03:24 - 03:27
in the class to do the tasks in the class.
- 03:28 - 03:31
You'll find those, um,
- 03:31 - 03:36
offline materials in this space mood all where you're working.
- 03:36 - 03:40
Now This is the university's virtual learning environment,
- 03:40 - 03:43
and you'll find all the online study materials that are
- 03:43 - 03:46
designed to support what you learn in your classroom.
- 03:47 - 03:50
It's really vital that you do as much as you can
- 03:50 - 03:53
to be ready to take part fully in classroom activities,
- 03:54 - 03:57
so you should sign into complete all the activities
- 03:57 - 03:58
that are set there for you every day.
- 03:59 - 04:02
And you'll also find instructions on what what you need
- 04:02 - 04:05
to do to get ready for the live sessions.
- 04:06 - 04:07
Mhm.
- 04:08 - 04:12
You're live online Classes will take place in Microsoft teams,
- 04:12 - 04:16
which is where you have a dedicated virtual classroom.
- 04:16 - 04:21
Your teacher will open the class meeting five minutes before the class start time
- 04:21 - 04:24
so that you can join and check your connection.
- 04:27 - 04:30
Apart from what you're studying online and doing in the class,
- 04:30 - 04:35
we're going to ask you to undertake a project as well.
- 04:35 - 04:40
Now the time that we have is very limited, and so for your project,
- 04:40 - 04:43
we hope that you will prepare and take part in a
- 04:43 - 04:48
live online poster presentation on the final day of the course.
- 04:49 - 04:54
Now then I can hear you saying, Well, what is opposed to presentation?
- 04:54 - 04:58
We'll explain everything to you on your first day of the course. Don't worry,
- 04:58 - 05:04
but just quickly you'll choose a topic that interests you and prepare a poster
- 05:04 - 05:06
to present two colleagues and tutors.
- 05:07 - 05:10
And it will give you an opportunity to pull together all
- 05:10 - 05:13
of the skills that you're learning during your two week programme.
- 05:15 - 05:20
So now it's time to get ready for the start of the course.
- 05:21 - 05:21
We
