Hello everyone. Welcome to my presentation.
- 00:04 - 00:08
The burnout is real teacher burnout and the fallout from it.
- 00:10 - 00:13
In selecting the topic for my ted project,
- 00:13 - 00:18
I went around and around and around with several different ideas
- 00:18 - 00:21
and nothing was really sticking for me.
- 00:22 - 00:24
And then it finally dawned on me,
- 00:25 - 00:26
nothing's working
- 00:26 - 00:28
because I'm tired.
- 00:29 - 00:31
And so then I decided,
- 00:31 - 00:34
let's focus on what we truly know about
- 00:35 - 00:36
pitcher burn out.
- 00:37 - 00:43
Teacher burnout is a real thing and in this post covid school year
- 00:43 - 00:49
things have changed and have redefined our norms and expectations
- 00:50 - 00:52
in and outside the classroom.
- 00:53 - 00:57
It's been said over and over again that self care should be
- 00:58 - 01:01
a top priority and mental health is important
- 01:01 - 01:04
yet. And still, we are
- 01:04 - 01:07
facing more and more challenges every day
- 01:07 - 01:10
and more and more things are being put on our plate as educators.
- 01:12 - 01:13
How do we deal?
- 01:14 - 01:16
Let's take a look at what
- 01:16 - 01:17
Burnett is.
- 01:18 - 01:21
Teacher burnout is a state of chronic stress
- 01:21 - 01:24
that leads to physical and emotional exhaustion,
- 01:24 - 01:28
cynicism, detachment, and feelings of ineffectiveness
- 01:28 - 01:30
and lack of accomplishment.
- 01:31 - 01:38
This is true, especially for me personally, I know that on a daily basis I am
- 01:38 - 01:40
not myself.
- 01:40 - 01:43
I feel like I'm not reaching my students and I'm not giving them
- 01:44 - 01:47
the best version of me that they should be getting.
- 01:48 - 01:53
But it's hard when you're trying to focus on so many aspects at the same time
- 01:53 - 01:57
and still try to maintain a healthy home work balance.
- 02:00 - 02:00
Uh huh.
- 02:15 - 02:18
So looking at some research, teacher burnout, of course,
- 02:18 - 02:20
it's not a new term is synonymous
- 02:20 - 02:24
with practically every possible profession out there.
- 02:24 - 02:28
Whether you are in the healthcare field, education,
- 02:29 - 02:34
construction, anywhere. Burnout is a real thing and it needs to be addressed.
- 02:36 - 02:39
Research conducted by Herbert, J.
- 02:39 - 02:39
M.
- 02:39 - 02:42
Berger from the early 1970s investigates burnout in
- 02:42 - 02:45
the terms of physical signs and behavioral indicators.
- 02:46 - 02:50
So the feeling of always being tired, short tempered forgetfulness,
- 02:50 - 02:54
all of these things fall into that same category.
- 02:58 - 02:59
Mhm.
- 03:00 - 03:00
Okay.
- 03:00 - 03:02
But let's get into it
- 03:04 - 03:07
In a survey that I conducted amongst teachers that
- 03:07 - 03:10
are currently in service and K through 12 classrooms.
- 03:10 - 03:14
A lot of responses flooded
- 03:14 - 03:16
my survey and
- 03:16 - 03:17
honestly, the results,
- 03:18 - 03:21
we're not surprising to me as an educator,
- 03:21 - 03:22
but
- 03:23 - 03:26
the things that my fellow educators are going through
- 03:27 - 03:29
are really unacceptable.
- 03:29 - 03:32
So when I asked him, how can you tell you're experiencing burnout,
- 03:34 - 03:37
several of them responded with their lack of motivation
- 03:38 - 03:42
when they sleep for an extended period of time and are waking up,
- 03:42 - 03:44
still not feeling refreshed,
- 03:44 - 03:46
they don't teach as well as they should,
- 03:46 - 03:50
they feel they get more irritated and things get to them quickly.
- 03:56 - 03:58
And then I asked,
- 03:58 - 04:00
well, how do you do with teacher burnout
- 04:02 - 04:04
here are some of the responses from my peers.
- 04:05 - 04:10
The majority of the responses did reflect around taking time off from work,
- 04:11 - 04:16
just taking a moment to step away, reevaluate, calm down
- 04:16 - 04:18
and try to become your better self.
- 04:21 - 04:21
Okay.
- 04:22 - 04:27
An important factor in teacher burnout is related to how administration
- 04:27 - 04:30
supports teachers during this very crucial time.
- 04:31 - 04:31
Yeah,
- 04:32 - 04:36
A lot of my colleagues didn't feel supported by the administration
- 04:37 - 04:39
And based on my servant results,
- 04:39 - 04:42
80% of teachers surveyed stated that their administration
- 04:42 - 04:46
does not provide support to prevent teacher burnout.
- 04:48 - 04:51
And some of the responses revolved around avoiding
- 04:53 - 04:54
unnecessary task
- 04:56 - 04:57
limiting,
- 04:58 - 05:00
non contractual activities
- 05:01 - 05:02
and things of that nature.
- 05:02 - 05:03
Yeah.
- 05:10 - 05:13
Now the fallout from teacher burnout,
- 05:15 - 05:19
teacher burnout is causing a massive teacher shortage
- 05:20 - 05:22
within the United States as well as other countries.
- 05:23 - 05:24
Teachers are tired,
- 05:25 - 05:31
they don't feel valued and naturally we all know teachers are severely underpaid
- 05:31 - 05:34
in every state. In the United States,
- 05:36 - 05:40
teacher burnout is a central factor contributing to teacher
- 05:40 - 05:44
attrition with one third to half of north american teachers
- 05:44 - 05:46
leaving the teaching profession
- 05:47 - 05:49
During the 1st 5 years of their career?
- 05:51 - 05:55
That survey was conducted back in the earlier part of 2020
- 05:56 - 05:57
Here in 2021,
- 05:58 - 06:00
that still seems to be the case.
- 06:02 - 06:04
in 12 out of 15 teachers interviewed,
- 06:05 - 06:08
They said they would hunt 100% not be
- 06:08 - 06:12
returning to the teaching profession for the 2022.
- 06:12 - 06:13
, school year
- 06:13 - 06:18
Two out of the 15 said they were unsure but leaning towards not returning
- 06:18 - 06:23
and only one teacher that I interviewed said that they would return and it was only
- 06:23 - 06:25
to ensure they had enough years of service
- 06:25 - 06:28
to combine with accumulated days to retire,
- 06:28 - 06:30
roughly six years early.
- 06:32 - 06:35
What does that really say about how
- 06:36 - 06:40
teachers are treated in these most stressful in trying times.
- 06:42 - 06:44
educators are faced with
- 06:45 - 06:46
a massive
- 06:48 - 06:49
question,
- 06:49 - 06:51
me or my profession.
- 06:52 - 06:54
How are we really handling
- 06:54 - 06:55
teacher burnout?
- 07:04 - 07:08
Thank you for coming to my tip is I hope this was informative and
- 07:08 - 07:12
gave you a little insight into what it is to feel a burn out.
