I'm Caroline Collins and my skin cancer presentation will be on squamous cell.
- 00:05 - 00:06
Carcinoma.
- 00:07 - 00:10
Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of cancer that is
- 00:10 - 00:13
caused by a mutation in squamous cells in the skin.
- 00:14 - 00:18
Uh squamous cells are found in epithelial tissue all over the body.
- 00:18 - 00:24
But um this type is found in the dermis and epidermis of the skin and when they mutate,
- 00:24 - 00:25
that's when the cancer is caused.
- 00:25 - 00:26
Um,
- 00:26 - 00:30
it's normally caused by repeated UV exposure like
- 00:30 - 00:33
being in the sun too often getting sunburned,
- 00:33 - 00:33
um
- 00:34 - 00:36
tanning beds and things like that.
- 00:36 - 00:37
Um In white people,
- 00:37 - 00:42
it's normally found on areas that have already been sunburned multiple times like
- 00:42 - 00:45
the nose. Um the upper ear hands
- 00:46 - 00:50
and on people of color. It's more generally found on the genitalia.
- 00:52 - 00:56
Um Common symptoms of squamous cell carcinoma are
- 00:56 - 00:58
raised bumps on the skin that are persistent,
- 00:58 - 01:05
uh also persistent, so sores, um especially if they have a scaly aspect to them.
- 01:05 - 01:10
Um Patches of it can also be found around the mouth or inside the mouth on the lips.
- 01:11 - 01:15
Um And genital warts on sores can also be squamous cell carcinoma.
- 01:15 - 01:20
Uh It's normally diagnosed uh by a skin examination
- 01:20 - 01:24
where then the doctor will skin biopsy it um by
- 01:24 - 01:27
scraping off some of the skin and looking at it under a
- 01:27 - 01:30
microscope to find out if the cells are cancerous or not.
- 01:31 - 01:35
Um There are a few ways it can be treated. Uh One of those is cartage which
- 01:36 - 01:41
the doctor scrapes off the uh outside of the skin where the cells are
- 01:41 - 01:44
or they can use photodynamic therapy.
- 01:44 - 01:48
Those are for uh less extreme cases, but um more extreme cases,
- 01:48 - 01:51
they could do a simple excision where they cut out
- 01:51 - 01:53
the entire part of the skin where the cancer is.
- 01:53 - 01:58
And um on very extreme cases, they may need radiation or chemotherapy
- 01:59 - 02:02
um to prevent squamous cell carcinoma.
- 02:02 - 02:06
It's important to wear sunscreen um when outside daily
- 02:06 - 02:12
um avoiding tanning beds and sun lamps, uh is also a very good way of preventing it
- 02:12 - 02:17
um wearing dark clothes that will prevent the UV from reaching your skin.
- 02:18 - 02:21
Also, it has been found that arsenic in water
- 02:21 - 02:24
and is a possible cause of this type of cancer.
- 02:24 - 02:28
So avoiding that as much as possible.
- 02:28 - 02:31
Um and having a strong immune system in general
- 02:32 - 02:33
um
- 02:33 - 02:35
will help prevent cancer
- 02:35 - 02:41
and getting uh frequent skin examinations will also help prevent um
- 02:42 - 02:45
getting this kind of cancer or catching it early.
- 02:45 - 02:47
Uh This is my work cited page.
